==Early life==
Retegui was born and raised in Argentina.  His maternal grandfather, Angelo Dimarco, emigrated to Argentina from [Canicattì](/source/Canicatt%C3%AC), [Sicily](/source/Sicily). His father's grandparents on one side of the family were also Italian, specifically from [Genoa](/source/Genoa), while the paternal ancestors were originally Basque (the surname Retegui being from [Gipuzkoa](/source/Gipuzkoa), Spain).

He is the son of former [field hockey](/source/field_hockey) player [Carlos Retegui](/source/Carlos_Retegui), who represented Argentina as a player and coach at various [Pan American Games](/source/Pan_American_Games) and [Olympic Games](/source/Olympic_Games).<ref name="Goal"/> His sister [Micaela](/source/Micaela_Retegui) is also an Olympian field hockey player.
