# Matagaia

***Matagaia*** is a [genus](/source/Genus_(biology)) of [jumping spiders](/source/Salticidae).[1] Its only species, ***M. chromatopus***, was only found on [Fernando de Noronha Island](/source/Fernando_de_Noronha_Island), an isolated group of volcanic islands located in the South Equatorial Atlantic, about 350 km from the nearest [Brazilian](/source/Brazil) mainland.[2]

## Description

*M. chromatopus* is similar to the genus *[Icius](/source/Icius)* in general appearance, [sexual dimorphism](/source/Sexual_dimorphism) and male [palp](/source/Pedipalp) structure. Females are almost 5 mm long, with males less than 4 mm.[2]

## Name

The species name refers to the male leg coloration, and is said to be derived from [ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) *chromos* "color" and *pus* "foot".[2] Ιn ancient Greek, "color" and "foot" are respectively *chrōma* (χρῶμα, genitive χρῶματος) and *pous* (πούς).[3]
