Mastrils is first mentioned in 1318 as ''Ponstrils''.  In 1345 it was mentioned as ''Bastrils''.<ref name=HDS/>  In 1854 the municipality separated from [Zizers](/source/Zizers) to become an independent municipality.<ref name="Fusion" />

Mastrils has an area, {{as of|2006|lc=on}}, of {{convert|8|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}.  Of this area, 23.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 68.8% is forested.  Of the rest of the land, 2.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).<ref name=SFSO/>

The municipality is located in the Fünf Dörfer sub-district of the Landquart district.  It is a widely scattered settlement on in the foothills of the [Calanda](/source/Haldensteiner_Calanda) mountains.  It consists of the settlements of Isla, Tardisbrücke and Trätsch.

==Demographics==
Mastrils has a population (as of {{Swiss populations date|CH-GR}}) of {{Swiss populations|CH-GR|3943}}.{{Swiss populations ref|CH-GR}}  {{as of|2008}}, 8.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals.<ref name=Population/>  Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 1.1%. In the [2007 federal election](/source/2007_Swiss_federal_election) the most popular party was the [SVP](/source/Swiss_People's_Party) which received 35.8% of the vote.  The next three most popular parties were the [SP](/source/Social_Democratic_Party_of_Switzerland) (29%), the [CVP](/source/Christian_Democratic_People's_Party_of_Switzerland) (14.8%) and the [FDP](/source/Free_Democratic_Party_of_Switzerland) (14.4%).<ref name=SFSO/>

The entire Swiss population is generally well educated.  In Mastrils about 71.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory [upper secondary education](/source/Education_in_Switzerland) or additional higher education (either university or a ''[Fachhochschule](/source/Fachhochschule)'').<ref name=SFSO/>
