In 1345 it was mentioned as ''Bastrils''. Of this area, 23.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 68.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains). The municipality is located in the Fünf Dörfer sub-district of the Landquart district. It is a widely scattered settlement on in the foothills of the [Calanda](/source/Haldensteiner_Calanda) mountains.
