In [Russian](/source/Russian_language), **Masha** (Маша) is a diminutive of [Maria](/source/Maria_(given_name)). Also as in [Ukrainian](/source/Ukrainian_language) is a diminutive of [Mariia](/source/Mariia_(disambiguation)) or [Mariya](/source/Mariya). It has been used as a [nickname](/source/Nickname) or as a pet name for women named Maria or Marie. An alternative spelling in the [Latin alphabet](/source/Latin_alphabet) is "Macha". In [Serbo-Croatian](/source/Serbo-Croatian) and [Slovene](/source/Slovene_language), "Maša" is a diminutive of "Marija" but can be a given name in its own right.
