**Masami Chinen** (知念 正美, *Chinen Masami*; 1898-1976)[1][2] was an [Okinawan martial arts](/source/Okinawan_martial_arts) master who formed [Yamani ryu](/source/Yamanni_ryu). He taught [Bōjutsu](/source/B%C5%8Djutsu) privately at his home in the village of Tobaru, in [Shuri, Okinawa](/source/Shuri%2C_Okinawa).

## Life

Like many martial arts masters Chinen had been a policeman. During the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) he lived with the martial arts master [Horoku Ishikawa](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Horoku_Ishikawa&action=edit&redlink=1) in [Tainan](/source/Tainan), [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan).[5] He also worked at the Shuri City Hall in [Shuri, Okinawa](/source/Shuri%2C_Okinawa).[6]

## Yamani Ryu Bōjutsu

Chinen named the style after his father [Sanra Chinen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sanra_Chinen&action=edit&redlink=1) who was also a teacher of Bōjutsu[2] and known as Yamani *Usumei* and Yamane *Tanmei*.[3][7]

## Legacy

Although the style ceased to exist after his death, some of his katas were preserved by [Seitoku Higa](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Seitoku_Higa&action=edit&redlink=1) of the [Bugeikan](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bugeikan&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Shūgorō Nakazato](/source/Sh%C5%ABgor%C5%8D_Nakazato) of [Shōrin-ryū](/source/Sh%C5%8Drin-ry%C5%AB).[3] Another student of Chinen's, [Chōgi Kishaba](/source/Chogi_Kishaba) and his student [Toshihiro Ōshiro](/source/Toshihiro_Oshiro) also privately practised Yamani Ryu katas. Ōshiro teaches [Bōjutsu](/source/B%C5%8Djutsu) today,[8] and so does Chinen's grandnephew [Teruo Chinen](/source/Teruo_Chinen).[6]

Originally, an older person from a family with traditional Ryukyu Kingdom rank had been called *tanmē/tanmei*, which has been applied as a honorific meaning sir or grandpa mainly on Okinawa island.
