It is located in the southeast of the country and belongs to the [Lankaran-Astara Economic Region](/source/Lankaran-Astara_Economic_Region). The district borders the districts of [Lankaran](/source/Lankaran_District), [Lerik](/source/Lerik_District), [Yardimli](/source/Yardimli_District), [Jalilabad](/source/Jalilabad_District_(Azerbaijan)), and [Neftchala](/source/Neftchala_District). Its capital and largest city is [Masally](/source/Masall%C4%B1). There are broad-leaved forests of Girkan type-[chestnut-leaved oak](/source/Quercus_castaneifolia), [hornbeam](/source/hornbeam), [beech](/source/beech), [Persian ironwood tree](/source/Parrotia_persica), Girkan boxwood, [Caucasian persimmon](/source/Date-plum), [medlar](/source/Mespilus_germanica) and others in the mountainous part of the district. == History ==
Masally district was established in 1930. Formerly, the territory of the district was part of [Arkevan](/source/%C6%8Frkivan) area of Lankaran District. Before that, the territory of the district belonged to ancient Manna and Atropatena states.
