Born Mary Martin in New Zealand, Martin studied at the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland), where she had lessons with [Richard Giese](/source/Richard_Giese), then principal flute in the [New Zealand Symphony Orchestra](/source/New_Zealand_Symphony_Orchestra). After graduating in 1976, Martin was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant to study at [Yale University](/source/Yale_University). She went on to win top prizes in the Naumburg Competition, the Munich International Competition, the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition, and the Concert Artists Guild—all within a two-year period. Following these successes, Martin moved to Paris to study with [Jean-Pierre Rampal](/source/Jean-Pierre_Rampal) at the [Nationale Superieur Conservatoire de Paris](/source/Nationale_Superieur_Conservatoire_de_Paris) and then later with [Sir James Galway](/source/Sir_James_Galway) in Lucerne, Switzerland.

In 1984, she founded the [Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival](/source/Bridgehampton_Chamber_Music_Festival) which, under her artistic direction, has done much to foster the development of chamber music presented in historically appropriate settings.<ref name="nz" />

She has performed internationally with orchestras including the [Seattle Symphony](/source/Seattle_Symphony), [Saint Louis Symphony](/source/Saint_Louis_Symphony), the [Brandenberg Ensemble](/source/Brandenberg_Ensemble), and the [Mostly Mozart Orchestra](/source/Mostly_Mozart_Orchestra). She has also made recital appearances at [Carnegie Hall](/source/Carnegie_Hall), the [Royal Albert Hall](/source/Royal_Albert_Hall) and [Wigmore Hall](/source/Wigmore_Hall) in London; the [Sydney Opera House](/source/Sydney_Opera_House); [Casals Hall](/source/Casals_Hall) in Tokyo; and other venues in Paris, New Zealand, and Australia. Martin has also toured with [James Galway](/source/James_Galway), playing duo concerts with him. As a chamber musician, Martin has appeared with the [Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center](/source/Chamber_Music_Society_of_Lincoln_Center), [Chamber Music at the Y](/source/Chamber_Music_at_the_Y), the [Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival](/source/Santa_Fe_Chamber_Music_Festival), [Music at Angel Fire](/source/Music_at_Angel_Fire), and [Bravo! Martin is on the board of Young Concert Artists and is a jurist in international music competitions.
