Mary Roach was born in [Hanover, New Hampshire](/source/Hanover%2C_New_Hampshire).[2] She was raised in [Etna](/source/Etna%2C_New_Hampshire),[3] a village within the town of Hanover. Both her parents worked at [Dartmouth College](/source/Dartmouth_College).[2]

Roach attended [Hanover High School](/source/Hanover_High_School_(New_Hampshire)) and was a straight-A student.[4] She graduated from [Wesleyan University](/source/Wesleyan_University) in 1981[3][5] with a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) in [psychology](/source/Psychology).[2]

## Career

After college, Roach moved to [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco), [California](/source/California),[3] and spent a few years working as a freelance [copy editor](/source/Copy_editor). Her writing career began in the public affairs office of the [San Francisco Zoological](/source/San_Francisco_Zoo) Society, producing [press releases](/source/Press_release) on topics such as [wart](/source/Wart) surgery on elephants. On her days off from the SFZS, she wrote freelance articles for [San Francisco Chronicle's Sunday magazine](/source/San_Francisco_Chronicle_Magazine), *Image*.[6]

She has written essays and feature articles for such publications as *[Vogue](/source/Vogue_(magazine))*, *[GQ](/source/GQ)*, *[The New York Times Magazine](/source/The_New_York_Times_Magazine)*, *[Discover Magazine](/source/Discover_Magazine)*, *[National Geographic](/source/National_Geographic_(magazine))*, *[Outside Magazine](/source/Outside_Magazine)*, and *[Wired](/source/Wired_(magazine))*[5][7] as well as columns for *[Salon.com](/source/Salon_(website))* In Health ("Stitches"), *[Reader's Digest](/source/Reader's_Digest)* ("My Planet"), and *[Sports Illustrated for Women](/source/Sports_Illustrated_for_Women)* ("The Slightly Wider World of Sports"),[5] and [Inc.com](/source/Inc._(magazine)).

From 1996 to 2005, Roach was part of "[the Grotto](/source/San_Francisco_Writers_Grotto)", a San Francisco-based project and community of working writers and filmmakers. It was in this community that Roach got the push she needed to break into book writing.[8] While being interviewed by Alex C. Telander of *BookBanter*, Roach described how she got started on her first book:

A few of us every year [from the Grotto] would make predictions for other people, where they'll be in a year. So someone made the prediction that, 'Mary will have a book contract.' I forgot about it and when October came around I thought, I have three months to pull together a book proposal and have a book contract. This is what literally lit the fire under my butt.[9]

Although Roach writes primarily about science, she never intended to make it her career. Roach stated in an interview with [TheVerge](/source/TheVerge).com, when asked what exactly got her hooked on writing about science, "To be honest, it turned out that science stories were always, consistently, the most interesting stories I was assigned to cover. I didn't plan it like this, and I don't have a formal background in science, or any education in science journalism."[10]

Roach has appeared on numerous television and radio programs including *[The Daily Show](/source/The_Daily_Show)*,[11]*[The Colbert Report](/source/The_Colbert_Report)*,[12] *[Coast to Coast AM](/source/Coast_to_Coast_AM)*,[13] National Public Radio's *[Fresh Air](/source/Fresh_Air)*,[14] and [C-SPAN2](/source/C-SPAN2) [Book TV](/source/Book_TV)'s *[In Depth](/source/In_Depth)*.[15] Her 2009 [TED talk](/source/TED_(conference))[16] "Ten Things You Didn't Know About Orgasm",[17] made the organization's list of its most popular talks of all time.[18]

*[Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers](/source/Stiff%3A_The_Curious_Lives_of_Human_Cadavers)* was a *New York Times* Bestseller, a 2003 [Barnes & Noble](/source/Barnes_%26_Noble) "Discover Great New Writers" pick, and one of *[Entertainment Weekly](/source/Entertainment_Weekly)*'s "Best Books of 2003." The book has been translated into at least 17 languages, including [Hungarian](/source/Hungarian_language) (Hullamerev) and [Lithuanian](/source/Lithuanian_language) (Negyvėliai). *Stiff* was also selected for the [Washington State University](/source/Washington_State_University) Common Reading Program in 2008–2009.[23]
