# Mary Geaney

**Mary Geaney** (born 1954) is an Irish sportswoman. She played senior [ladies' Gaelic football](/source/Ladies'_Gaelic_football) for [Kerry](/source/Kerry_county_ladies'_football_team), senior [camogie](/source/Camogie) for [Cork](/source/Cork_county_camogie_team) and is also a former [Ireland women's field hockey international](/source/Ireland_women's_national_field_hockey_team). In [1976](/source/1976_All-Ireland_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship_final) she captained Kerry when they won the [All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship) and in [1980](/source/1980_All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship) she captained Cork when they won the [All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship). She was the first player to captain a team to both championships.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] As a field hockey international, she was a member of the Ireland team that won the 1983 Women's Intercontinental Cup. In 2010 she was inducted into the [Irish Hockey Association](/source/Irish_Hockey_Association) Hall of Fame.[8]

## Early years, family and education

Mary Geaney is the daughter of Con Geaney, a member of the [Kerry](/source/Kerry_county_football_team) team that won the [1932 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship](/source/1932_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship). Her brother, [David Geaney](/source/David_Geaney_(Castleisland_Gaelic_footballer)), was a member of the Kerry team that won the same All-Ireland championship in [1959](/source/1959_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship).[9] She was educated at the Ursuline Secondary School in [Blackrock, Cork](/source/Blackrock,_Cork).[1]

## Ladies' Gaelic football

Geaney began playing [ladies' Gaelic football](/source/Ladies'_Gaelic_football) for [Castleisland Desmonds](/source/Castleisland_Desmonds_GAA).[1][2][10] In 1973 she played for [Kerry](/source/Kerry_county_ladies'_football_team) against [Cork](/source/Cork_county_ladies'_football_team) in one of the first ladies' Gaelic football games between the two counties. Kerry won by 5–10 to 4–11 with Geaney scoring 2–6.[11][12] In [1974](/source/1974_All-Ireland_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship) she played for Kerry when they lost to [Tipperary](/source/Tipperary_senior_ladies'_football_team) in the first [Munster Senior Ladies' Football Championship](/source/Munster_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship) final. In [1976](/source/1976_All-Ireland_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship_final) she captained Kerry when they won the [All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Ladies'_Football_Championship), defeating [Offaly](/source/Offaly_county_ladies'_football_team) by 4–6 to 1–5. With 3–2, Geany was also the top scorer in the final. She also scored the first ever hat-trick in a Ladies' All-Ireland final.[1][11][13] Geaney also won the [All-Ireland Ladies Club Football Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Ladies_Club_Football_Championship) with Castleisland Desmonds.[9] She also represented [Munster](/source/Munster_GAA) at interprovincial level.[11]

## Camogie

Geaney played [camogie](/source/Camogie) for [Castleisland Desmonds](/source/Castleisland_Desmonds_GAA) and [Éire Óg](/source/%C3%89ire_%C3%93g_GAA_(Cork)). Between [1978](/source/1978_All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship) and [1988](/source/1988_All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship) she also played for [Cork](/source/Cork_county_camogie_team) in six [All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship](/source/All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship) finals. Geaney finished on the winning side in 1978, [1980](/source/1980_All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship) and [1983](/source/1983_All-Ireland_Senior_Camogie_Championship). In six finals she scored 7–5. In the 1978 final she scored a hat-trick of goals and in 1980 she captained the winning Cork team.[1][2][14][15][16] She also represented [Munster](/source/Munster_GAA) at interprovincial level in the [Gael Linn Cup](/source/Gael_Linn_Cup).

## Field hockey

Geaney played field hockey for Old Ursulines ([Cork](/source/Cork_(city))), Munster and [Ireland](/source/Ireland_women's_national_field_hockey_team). She made her senior international debut in 1971 against [England](/source/England_women's_national_field_hockey_team). She subsequently made 61 senior appearances for Ireland. She was a member of the Ireland teams that won the 1977 Triple Crown and the 1983 Women's Intercontinental Cup. In 2010, together with her former team mate, [Margaret Gleghorne](/source/Margaret_Gleghorne), she was inducted into the [Irish Hockey Association](/source/Irish_Hockey_Association) Hall of Fame.
