**Marty Carlin** (born 1961 or 1962) is an Irish former [Gaelic footballer](/source/Gaelic_football) who played for Robert Emmets, Red Hughs and the [Donegal county team](/source/Donegal_county_football_team).

His father John was a provincial [high jump](/source/High_jump) champion.[1] His brother Sean achieved county records in the [decathlon](/source/Decathlon) and the [discus throw](/source/Discus_throw) and narrowly missed the [1984 Summer Olympics](/source/1984_Summer_Olympics) with a [hamstring](/source/Hamstring) injury.[1] Sean, as well as their brothers Eugene, Joseph and Declan, all played for Red Hughs.[1]

With his club Carlin scored 0–10 against [Cill Chartha](/source/CLG_Chill_Chartha) in the 1981 [Donegal JFC](/source/Donegal_Junior_Football_Championship) final.[2] He reached finals of the [Donegal Senior Football Championship](/source/Donegal_Senior_Football_Championship) in 1986 and 1991.[1] He won a Division 1 league title in 1994.[1]

He also played other sports: [golf](/source/Golf); [association football](/source/Association_football) with Curragh Athletic and [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) with [Letterkenny](/source/Letterkenny_RFC). County manager [Tom Conaghan](/source/Tom_Conaghan) dropped Carlin and [Charlie Mulgrew](/source/Charlie_Mulgrew_(Gaelic_footballer)) from his team for one year after they played for Letterkenny in a Forster Cup final victory at [Ravenhill](/source/Ravenhill_Stadium) in 1987.[1]

Carlin returned to the team and played in both the 1989 [Ulster Senior Football Championship](/source/Ulster_Senior_Football_Championship) final and replay.[1] They were two of only six appearances he made for his county in championship football.[1]

Carlin left the county team at the end of 1990 after informing manager [Brian McEniff](/source/Brian_McEniff) of his decision.[1] Thus he missed the [1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final](/source/1992_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship_Final), which Donegal won.[1] At the local homecoming, clubmate [Donal Reid](/source/Donal_Reid) gave him a special mention and invited him onto the stage.[1] After being awarded Donegal Player of the Year in 1993, Carlin was prompted to make a brief return for his county in 1994.[1]

Since retiring, he has endured [bowel cancer](/source/Bowel_cancer).[3]
