Purdy was born in [Crawley](/source/Crawley), [West Sussex](/source/West_Sussex) and attended [The Judd School](/source/The_Judd_School) in [Tonbridge](/source/Tonbridge).  Following his [A-level](/source/A-level)s, Purdy accepted an offer to study at [Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge](/source/Fitzwilliam_College%2C_Cambridge), where he completed his undergraduate degree. Purdy signed a senior contract with Wasps in 2003 and made 51 appearances for them over the next 4 years.
