# Martin MacDonald

**Martin MacDonald** (born ca 1977)[1] is a Canadian conductor and the music director of the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra since January 2022.[2]

## Early life

He was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, MacDonald is the youngest of 12 children, and started to play cello when he was six years old.[3][1] He participated in the family's [Celtic music](/source/Celtic_music) band.[1] He studied cello at [Memorial University of Newfoundland](/source/Memorial_University_of_Newfoundland) and earned a master's degree in conducting at [McGill University](/source/McGill_University).[1]

## Career

When he graduated he was hired at [National Academy Orchestra of Canada](/source/National_Academy_Orchestra_of_Canada) and in 2008 he took a job as Associate Conductor for [Symphony Nova Scotia](/source/Symphony_Nova_Scotia).[1]

He has guest conducted for the [Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra](/source/Hamilton_Philharmonic_Orchestra), [Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra](/source/Thunder_Bay_Symphony_Orchestra), [Orchestra London Canada](/source/Orchestra_London_Canada), [Windsor Symphony Orchestra](/source/Windsor_Symphony_Orchestra), [National Arts Centre Orchestra](/source/National_Arts_Centre_Orchestra),[4] and the [Oakville Symphony Orchestra](/source/Oakville_Symphony_Orchestra).[5]

## Awards

In 2010, MacDonald was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award in Orchestral Conducting awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts[6] and in 2013 he won the Heinz Unger Award awarded by the Ontario Arts Council.[4]
