**Martin Lemay** (born March 19, 1964, in [Amos, Quebec](/source/Amos,_Quebec)) is a politician in [Quebec](/source/Quebec), Canada. He is the [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) (PQ) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for [Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques](/source/Sainte-Marie%E2%80%93Saint-Jacques) in the [National Assembly of Quebec](/source/National_Assembly_of_Quebec).

## Background

He studied [history](/source/History) and [sociology](/source/Sociology) at the [Université du Québec à Montréal](/source/Universit%C3%A9_du_Qu%C3%A9bec_%C3%A0_Montr%C3%A9al). He also received a post graduate certificate in [public management](/source/Public_management) at the [École nationale d'administration publique](/source/%C3%89cole_nationale_d'administration_publique).

## Montreal city politics

Lemay began his political career in municipal politics being a councilor for the district of [Sainte-Marie](/source/Sainte-Marie,_Quebec) in the Montreal region from 1994 to 1998. In 2000, he was president of the [Ville-Marie](/source/Ville-Marie,_Montreal) borough. When [Pierre Bourque](/source/Pierre_Bourque_(politician)) tried to be elected MNA for the [Action démocratique du Québec](/source/Action_d%C3%A9mocratique_du_Qu%C3%A9bec) (ADQ), he became leader of Vision Montréal, which was then the Official Opposition party against [Gérald Tremblay](/source/G%C3%A9rald_Tremblay).

## Member of the legislature

In April 2006, he was elected in [Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques](/source/Sainte-Marie%E2%80%93Saint-Jacques), the former stronghold of [Claude Charron](/source/Claude_Charron) and [André Boulerice](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Boulerice), in a [by-election](/source/By-election), defeating the [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Quebec) candidate [Nathalie Malépart](/source/Nathalie_Mal%C3%A9part), who was the daughter of former MNA [Jean-Claude Malépart](/source/Jean-Claude_Mal%C3%A9part).

This was the first election in which the [Québec Solidaire](/source/Qu%C3%A9bec_Solidaire) party took part. Lemay had received the support of the [SPQ Libre](/source/SPQ_Libre) of [Pierre Dubuc](/source/Pierre_Dubuc).

At the time of his assembly nomination, Lemay asked [Jean Charest](/source/Jean_Charest) to legislate on [climate change](/source/Climate_change), trying to benefit from the recent resignation of [Thomas Mulcair](/source/Thomas_Mulcair). He was named spokesperson on Housing, replacing [Nicole Léger](/source/Nicole_L%C3%A9ger).

After his [2007 re-election](/source/2007_Quebec_general_election), he was named the PQ critic for Immigration and Cultural Communities.
