Among his dramas are the films ''[Certain Practices](/source/Certain_Practices)'', ''[War Brides](/source/War_Brides_(1980_film))'', ''[Charlie Grant's War](/source/Charlie_Grant's_War)'' and ''[The Marriage Bed](/source/The_Marriage_Bed)''. His documentaries include ''[At Home](/source/At_Home_(film))'', ''Without a Hobby It’s No Life'', ''Orillia'', and ''After Darwin''. In 2006, he directed ''[Remembering Arthur](/source/Remembering_Arthur)'', a biography of filmmaker [Arthur Lipsett](/source/Arthur_Lipsett).

In 2010, he completed a documentary about the eccentric portrait photographer [Mike Disfarmer](/source/Mike_Disfarmer) which premiered on [TVOntario](/source/TVOntario).

As a voice actor he is best known for his contributions to early [Nelvana Limited](/source/Nelvana_Limited) films, such as ''[The Devil and Daniel Mouse](/source/The_Devil_and_Daniel_Mouse)'' and its spin-off, ''[Rock & Rule](/source/Rock_%26_Rule)''. He studied acting at California's [Pasadena Playhouse](/source/Pasadena_Playhouse), and New York's [American Theatre Wing](/source/American_Theatre_Wing). He acted with Compass/[Second City](/source/The_Second_City)’s Saint Louis Company. Lavut died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
