'''Martin Lane''' (born 12 April 1961) is an English former [football](/source/Association_football)er who played mainly as a [full-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)). Born in [Altrincham](/source/Altrincham), he made appearances in [The Football League](/source/The_Football_League) for four clubs, with most of his career being spent with [Chester City](/source/Chester_City_F.C.).

==Playing career==
Lane joined [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United_F.C.) as a youngster in 1977 and spent five years at [Old Trafford](/source/Old_Trafford) without making a competitive first-team appearance. He joined [Chester City](/source/Chester_City_F.C.) in August 1982, making his debut in a [Football League Trophy](/source/Football_League_Trophy) tie away at [Chesterfield](/source/Chesterfield_F.C.) during the same month.<ref name="Sumner 1997">Sumner (1997), stats section</ref> He quickly became a regular in the side and even had a successful game as a makeshift centre-forward in Chester's 4–2 win at [Tranmere Rovers](/source/Tranmere_Rovers_F.C.) in December 1982, scoring twice.<ref>Sumner (1997), p 98</ref> Despite remaining a regular player, Lane had to wait until April 1986 for his next Chester goal, scoring direct from a [corner kick](/source/corner_kick) in a 2–1 win over [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.) to help the club move to the brink of promotion.<ref name="Sumner 1997"/> During the same season, Lane was part of a defence that helped Chester go 423 minutes without conceding a goal.<ref name="Clean Sheet Records">{{cite web |url=http://www.chester-city.co.uk/clean_sheets.asp |title=Clean Sheet Records |publisher=chester-city.co.uk |accessdate=27 January 2008 }}</ref>

After helping Chester to a 2–1 win over [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.) in the [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) third round in January 1987, Lane moved to [Division One](/source/Football_League_First_Division) side [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.) for £25,000.<ref>Sumner (1997), p 104</ref> After making just three league appearances in two years at [Highfield Road](/source/Highfield_Road) and spending time on loan with [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.), Lane returned to Chester for the same amount he had been sold for in January 1989.<ref>Sumner (1997), p 106</ref> His arrival was quickly followed by a run of four successive wins without conceding a goal,<ref name="Clean Sheet Records"/> as Chester came close to qualifying for the [Division Three](/source/Football_League_Third_Division) play-offs. Lane remained a regular until the end of the [1990–91 season](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_in_English_football), playing his final game in a 1–0 defeat at [Bolton Wanderers](/source/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.) on 11 May 1991.<ref name="Sumner 1997"/>

Lane made just 10 appearances in a season with [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.) and then dropped into non-league football, having spells with clubs including [Shepshed Albion](/source/Shepshed_Dynamo_F.C.), [Worcester City](/source/Worcester_City_F.C.) and [Hinckley Town](/source/Hinckley_United_F.C.), while working for a security company.<ref>''Player Memories'', Chester City v.
