# Martin Hattala

**Martin Hattala** (4 November 1821 in [Trstená](/source/Trsten%C3%A1), [Kingdom of Hungary](/source/Kingdom_of_Hungary) – 11 December 1903 in [Prague](/source/Prague))[1] was a Slovak pedagogue, [Catholic priest](/source/Catholic_priest), theologian, and linguist. He is best known for his reform of [Štúr](/source/%C4%BDudov%C3%ADt_%C5%A0t%C3%BAr)'s Slovak language, called the [Hodža](/source/Michal_Miloslav_Hod%C5%BEa)–Hattala reform, in which he introduced the etymological principle to the [Slovak language](/source/Slovak_language).

Hattala was a faculty member of the University of Prague.[1] He was also a member of the academies of Bohemia and Russian Empire.[1]

His collection of work was purchased and is now part of the [Library of Congress](/source/Library_of_Congress)’s Slavic collection.[1]
