Donegal Gaelic footballer

**Martin Gavigan** is an old [Gaelic footballer](/source/Gaelic_football) who played as a defender for [Ard an Rátha](/source/CLG_Ard_an_R%C3%A1tha), the [Donegal county team](/source/Donegal_county_football_team) and the [Ireland international rules football team](/source/Ireland_international_rules_football_team).

He was a member of Donegal's [1992](/source/1992_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship_Final) All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning team. He played for the county from 1988 until 1995.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

He played against [Armagh](/source/Armagh_county_football_team) in the 1990 Ulster final, won by Donegal.[1]

He started at centre-back in the 1992 All-Ireland Final as Donegal defeated [Dublin](/source/Dublin_county_football_team) by a scoreline of 0–18 to 0–14. He would win an [All Star](/source/List_of_All_Stars_Awards_winners_(football)) in 1992 too.[2]

Known as "Rambo", he was a schoolteacher.[3] In 1992, *[Hogan Stand](/source/Hogan_Stand)* was able to indicate that: "Even objective observers of the game in Donegal recognised that the [Shovlin](/source/Martin_Shovlin), Gavigan and [Reid](/source/Donal_Reid) combination probably represented the best line of defence in the country. The Dublin trio of [Curran](/source/Paul_Curran_(Gaelic_footballer)), [Carr](/source/Tommy_Carr_(Gaelic_footballer)) and [Heery](/source/Eamon_Heery) were the only other combination which vied for that tag, it was suggested".[4]

He vice-captained [Ireland](/source/Ireland_international_rules_football_team) for the [1990 Tour of Australia](/source/1990_International_Rules_Series).[5]

In May 2012, the *[Irish Independent](/source/Irish_Independent)* named him in its selection of Donegal's "greatest team" spanning the previous 50 years.[6]

He got married the Saturday after the 1992 All-Ireland final.[7] His brother [Luke](/source/Luke_Gavigan) also featured for Donegal.[5] Luke's son (and Martin's nephew), Luke Jnr, based with the [Seán Mac Cumhaills](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=CLG_Se%C3%A1n_Mac_Cumhaills&action=edit&redlink=1) club, captained the Donegal under-20 team that reached the 2020 Ulster final.[5][8]
