# Marthe Bonnard

**Marthe Bonnard** (born 22 February 1869 in [Saint-Amand-Montrond](/source/Saint-Amand-Montrond) - died 26 January 1942 in [Le Cannet](/source/Le_Cannet)) was a [French](/source/French_people) painter best known as the [muse](/source/Muse_(source_of_inspiration)), [mistress](/source/Mistress_(lover)) and later [wife](/source/Wife) of [Pierre Bonnard](/source/Pierre_Bonnard).[1]

Marthe Bonnard was born as **Maria Boursin**, and met Bonnard in 1893.[2] After Pierre Bonnard's death, Marthe Bonnard was named as "Marthe de Méligny" in litigation at the [French Court of Cassation](/source/Court_of_Cassation_(France)).[3]
