# Martel Inlet

**Martel Inlet** ([62°5′S 58°22′W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=62_5_S_58_22_W)) is an inlet forming the northeast head of [Admiralty Bay](/source/Admiralty_Bay_(South_Shetland_Islands)), [King George Island](/source/King_George_Island_(South_Shetland_Islands)), in the [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands) off Antarctica. The inlet and most of its constituent features were charted in December 1909 by the [Fourth French Antarctic Expedition](/source/Fourth_French_Antarctic_Expedition) under [Jean-Baptiste Charcot](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Charcot) and named "Fiord Martel" after J.L. Martel, a French politician.[3] The mountain ridge [Ullmann Spur](/source/Ullmann_Spur) is located at the head of the inlet.[4]

Visca Anchorage is the northwestern [cove](/source/Cove) of Martel Inlet. It was named by Charcot for an acquaintance in [Montevideo](/source/Montevideo).[5] Within the cove is Sea Leopard Patch, a [shoal](/source/Shoal) with a least depth of 18 m (59 ft). It was charted in 1927 by [Discovery Investigations](/source/Discovery_Investigations) personnel on the Discovery and named after the leopard seal, *[Hydrurga leptonyx](/source/Hydrurga_leptonyx)*.[6]
