'''Markington''' is a village in the [English county](/source/English_county) of [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire). The population of the civil parish (including [Markenfield Hall](/source/Markenfield_Hall)) taken at the [2011 census](/source/United_Kingdom_Census_2011) was 629.<ref>{{NOMIS2011|id=E04007384|title=Markington with Wallerthwaite Parish|accessdate=26 June 2019}}</ref> Nearby settlements include the city of [Ripon](/source/Ripon), the town of [Harrogate](/source/Harrogate), the village of [South Stainley](/source/South_Stainley) and the hamlet of [Ingerthorpe](/source/Ingerthorpe). The [A61](/source/A61_road) is nearby. Markington has a school,  post office, village hall, cricket and football pitch, a church, a pub and a camp site.

The place name was first recorded in about 1030 as ''Mercinga tun''. The name is probably from [Old English](/source/Old_English) ''mercinga'' "of the boundary people" and ''tūn'' "settlement or farmstead", so meaning "settlement of the boundary people". Markington is the principal settlement in the [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) of '''Markington with Wallerthwaite'''. Wallerthwaite is a [deserted medieval village](/source/deserted_medieval_village) just south of Markington.  Markington with Wallerthwaite was historically a [township](/source/Township_(England)) in the parish of Ripon, and became a separate civil parish in 1866.
