**Mark Strickson** (born 6 April 1959) is an English television producer and actor best known for playing [companion](/source/Companion_(Doctor_Who)) [Vislor Turlough](/source/Vislor_Turlough) in *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)* from 1983 to 1984.

## Early life

Strickson was born in [Stratford-upon-Avon](/source/Stratford-upon-Avon), England. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School in his home town, the same school as [William Shakespeare](/source/William_Shakespeare),[1] and was also a chorister at [Holy Trinity Church](/source/Church_of_the_Holy_Trinity%2C_Stratford-upon-Avon) (Shakespeare's Church), where his father, John Strickson, was organist and choirmaster. He studied drama at [RADA](/source/RADA) in London.[2]

## Career

As an actor, Strickson appeared in the BBC medical series *[Angels](/source/Angels_(TV_series))* before landing his part in *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)*,[3] co-starring with [Peter Davison](/source/Peter_Davison) and [Janet Fielding](/source/Janet_Fielding) between 1983 and 1984. He appeared at *Doctor Who*'s 20th-anniversary celebrations in Longleat in 1983, alongside many other cast and crew members from the series. He also played the young [Ebenezer Scrooge](/source/Ebenezer_Scrooge) in the 1984 television film *[A Christmas Carol](/source/A_Christmas_Carol_(1984_film))* starring [George C. Scott](/source/George_C._Scott).

After this, Strickson emigrated to Australia, where he studied [zoology](/source/Zoology) at the [Armidale](/source/Armidale) campus of the [University of New England](/source/University_of_New_England_(Australia)), part-funding his education by teaching theatre studies for five years.[4] He subsequently relocated to [Dunedin](/source/Dunedin), [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand), where he took up residence.[5] He appeared in a television advertising campaign for [Strepsils](/source/Strepsils) throat lozenges which aired in Australia and New Zealand in 1993. Strickson became a documentary producer and director, especially of [wildlife documentary](/source/Wildlife_documentary) programmes. He has produced programmes for, amongst others, the [Discovery Channel](/source/Discovery_Channel), the [BBC](/source/BBC), [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_network)), [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4) and [Animal Planet](/source/Animal_Planet). In this capacity, he brought [Steve Irwin](/source/Steve_Irwin), the "Crocodile Hunter", to public attention with such shows as *The Ten Deadliest Snakes in the World.*[6][7][8][9]

Strickson has reprised the role of Turlough in the [Big Finish Productions](/source/Big_Finish_Productions) *Doctor Who* [audio dramas](/source/Radio_drama).[10] He has also contributed interviews and voiceover commentaries for DVD releases of his various *Doctor Who* serials.
