# Mark Rylands

**Mark James Rylands** (born 11 July 1961) is a British [Anglican](/source/Anglican) bishop. From 2009 until 2018, he was the [area](/source/Area_bishop) [Bishop of Shrewsbury](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Shrewsbury) in the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England).

## Early life

Rylands was born on 11 July 1961, the son of Michael Rylands and Denise née Bates.[2] Michael was sometime [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [Wilton, Wiltshire](/source/Wilton,_Wiltshire), [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Malpas, Cheshire](/source/Malpas,_Cheshire) and [honorary canon](/source/Honorary_canon) of [Chester](/source/Chester_Cathedral)[3][a][3] and Denise a scion of the [Bates baronets](/source/Bates_baronets) (of Bellefield): her grandfather was Edward, 2nd Baronet.[4] He was educated at [Shrewsbury School](/source/Shrewsbury_School) and the [College of St Hild and St Bede](/source/College_of_St_Hild_and_St_Bede), [Durham University](/source/Durham_University), the latter whence he graduated with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) (BA) degree in 1983. He trained for the ministry at [Trinity College, Bristol](/source/Trinity_College,_Bristol), gaining a second BA in 1987;[5] and later studied for a [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) degree from [Sheffield University](/source/Sheffield_University), which he was awarded in 2006.

## Ordained ministry

He was made a deacon at [Petertide](/source/Petertide) 1987 (27 June)[6] and [ordained](/source/Ordained) a priest the Petertide following (3 July 1988) — both times by [Michael Baughen](/source/Michael_Baughen), [Bishop of Chester](/source/Bishop_of_Chester), at [Chester Cathedral](/source/Chester_Cathedral);[7] he began his ordained ministry with a title post as [assistant curate](/source/Assistant_curate) at [St George's Heaviley](/source/St_George's_Church,_Heaviley), [Stockport](/source/Stockport)[8] (1987–1991); he was then vicar of [Acton](/source/Acton,_Cheshire) and [Worleston](/source/Worleston), [Church Minshull](/source/Church_Minshull) and [Wettenhall, Cheshire](/source/Wettenhall,_Cheshire) (1991–1997). He moved to [Somerset](/source/Somerset) in 1997 to be [team tector](/source/Team_tector) for the [Langport](/source/Langport) team ministry[2] ([Aller](/source/Aller,_Somerset), [Drayton](/source/Drayton,_Somerset), [High Ham](/source/High_Ham) with [Low Ham](/source/Low_Ham), [Huish Episcopi](/source/Huish_Episcopi), [Long Sutton](/source/Long_Sutton,_Somerset), [Muchelney](/source/Muchelney) and [Pitney](/source/Pitney)); then from 2002[5] until his appointment to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate)[9] he was diocesan missioner for the [Diocese of Exeter](/source/Diocese_of_Exeter) and a [canon residentiary](/source/Canon_residentiary) at [Exeter Cathedral](/source/Exeter_Cathedral).[10]

### Episcopate

Rylands was appointed [Bishop of Shrewsbury](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Shrewsbury), one of three [area bishops](/source/Area_bishop) ([suffragan bishops](/source/Suffragan_bishop) with delegated responsibility for episcopal areas) in the [Diocese of Lichfield](/source/Diocese_of_Lichfield): he was consecrated a bishop at [Westminster Abbey](/source/Westminster_Abbey) on 28 October 2009 by [Rowan Williams](/source/Rowan_Williams), [Archbishop of Canterbury](/source/Archbishop_of_Canterbury),[11] and installed at [Lichfield Cathedral](/source/Lichfield_Cathedral) on 2 November 2009.[12][13][14]

In March 2018 it was announced that Rylands would resign as Bishop of Shrewsbury and return to parish ministry.[15] Since July 2018,[16] he has led the Ashburton and Moorland team ministry in the [Diocese of Exeter](/source/Diocese_of_Exeter), first as [priest-in-charge](/source/Priest-in-charge) and then as [rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) since 2021.[17] He has additionally been an [honorary assistant bishop](/source/Honorary_assistant_bishop) in the Diocese of Exeter since 2018.[16]

## Personal life

Mark married in 1986 and they have two adult children;[2] his wife is also a priest.[b]

1. Thomas Michael Rylands was made a deacon in 1947,[18] ordained a priest in 1948,[19] and died on 21 October 2003, aged 85.
