# Mark Plati

American musician, record producer, and songwriter

**Mark Plati** is a New York–based musician, record producer, and songwriter, best known for his work in the 1990s with [David Bowie](/source/David_Bowie).

## Early life and education

Plati grew up in [Aurora, Colorado](/source/Aurora%2C_Colorado).[1] He studied at [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University)'s [Jacobs School of Music](/source/Jacobs_School_of_Music)'s audio technology program, and gained a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) in [telecommunications](/source/Telecommunications), an [associate's degree](/source/Associate_degree) in [audio technology](/source/Sound_recording_and_reproduction) and a [minor](/source/Academic_minor) in music.[2]

## Career

Upon graduating, Plati spent just over a year working at a recording studio in [Dallas, Texas](/source/Dallas), before moving to New York City, where he became a remixer and programmer at another recording studio. His first major booking was working with [Prince](/source/Prince_(musician)) at his [Paisley Park](/source/Paisley_Park) studio. He met [David Bowie](/source/David_Bowie) by "happy accident" a short while later, the beginning of a fruitful partnership.[3] Plati co-produced Bowie's 1997 *[Earthling](/source/Earthling_(David_Bowie_album))* album.[2]

As of 2025, Plati is owner of Alice Michael Music Inc.[5]
