He joined the [Foreign Office](/source/Foreign_Office) in 1965.<ref name=WW/> He was [1st Secretary](/source/1st_Secretary) in [Rome](/source/Rome) 1976–1980, and Assistant Head of the Personnel Operations Department 1981–1983. He was seconded to [Hambros Bank](/source/Hambros_Bank) (1989–1991), and served as a [Counsellor](/source/Consul_(representative)) in [Washington](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.) (1983–1989).
