# Mark Lothar

**Mark Lothar** [ló:tar] (born **Lothar Hundertmark**; 23 May 1902 in [Berlin](/source/Berlin) – 6 April 1985 in [Munich](/source/Munich)) was a [German](/source/Germans) [composer](/source/Composer).

## Life

From 1921 to 1926, he studied piano with [Franz Schreker](/source/Franz_Schreker) and [Walther Carl Meiszner](/source/Walther_Carl_Meiszner) in Berlin[1] and with [Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari](/source/Ermanno_Wolf-Ferrari) in Munich. Early on he became famous accompanying singers such as [Erna Berger](/source/Erna_Berger), Corry Nera, who in 1934 on became his wife, and [Hermann Prey](/source/Hermann_Prey). In 1933 he was recruited as a music specialist for the German Theater by [Max Reinhardt](/source/Max_Reinhardt), since Lothar was a member of the [Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur](/source/Kampfbund_f%C3%BCr_deutsche_Kultur), an antisemitic organization forming part of the [Völkisch movement](/source/V%C3%B6lkisch_movement).[2] One year later he became the musical director of the Prussian State Theater in Berlin thanks to [Gustaf Gründgens](/source/Gustaf_Gr%C3%BCndgens). He held this position until 1944. During his tenure, he composed various pieces on behalf of [Joseph Goebbels](/source/Joseph_Goebbels).[2] In May 1938 his opera *[Tailor Wibbel](/source/Tailor_Wibbel)*, inspired by a play by [Hans Müller-Schlösser](/source/Hans_M%C3%BCller-Schl%C3%B6sser), was performed at the [Berlin State Opera](/source/Berlin_State_Opera). In August 1944, Adolf Hitler included in the [Gottbegnadeten list](/source/Gottbegnadeten_list), an exclusive list of artists exempt from military service.[2]

Since 1945 he worked for the Bavarian state theater and since 1955 as free composer based in Munich.

He was also renown as a composer of theater and film music (e.g. form [Friedemann Bach](/source/Friedemann_Bach_(film)), [Holiday in Tyrol](/source/Holiday_in_Tyrol) and [Faust](/source/Faust_(1960_film)) by [Gustaf Gründgens](/source/Gustaf_Gr%C3%BCndgens)) and of songs to text from [Hermann Löns](/source/Hermann_L%C3%B6ns), [Hermann Hesse](/source/Hermann_Hesse), [Joachim Ringelnatz](/source/Joachim_Ringelnatz), [Christian Morgenstern](/source/Christian_Morgenstern) and other German poets.

His grave is located on the Solln Cemetery in Munich.
