## Early life

Ivanir was born in Chernovtsi, [Ukrainian SSR](/source/Ukrainian_SSR) (now [Chernivtsi](/source/Chernivtsi), Ukraine) to a Jewish family. His family emigrated to Israel in 1972, and settled in the [Pardes Katz](/source/Pardes_Katz) neighbourhood of [Bnei Brak](/source/Bnei_Brak). His father, Alexander, was an [English language](/source/English_language) teacher, and his mother Malka a [German language](/source/German_language) teacher. His maternal grandfather, Meshulem Surkis, was a [Yiddish](/source/Yiddish) writer, journalist, actor, and theatre critic, who was a well-known activist in the Yiddish cultural world. He was raised in a multilingual household, speaking [Hebrew](/source/Hebrew), [Ukrainian](/source/Ukrainian_language), and [Russian](/source/Russian_language), and later learning English.

His [national service](/source/National_service) in the [Israeli Defense Forces](/source/Israeli_Defense_Forces) saw him involved in [Operation Joshua](/source/Operation_Joshua), one of two operations by the IDF to bring [Ethiopian Jews](/source/Ethiopian_Jews) from [Sudanese](/source/Sudan) refugee camps to Israel. After completing his service, he turned down a job offer from the [Mossad](/source/Mossad).[1] He briefly studied medicine, before deciding on a life in the [performing arts](/source/Performing_arts). He completed two years in a circus school, traveled throughout Europe performing on the streets as a clown, and ended up working in the Parisian Cirque Pawelles. After leaving the circus, Mark entered into formal theatrical training under famed Israeli director [Nissan Nativ](/source/Nissan_Nativ), performing at the [Cameri Theater](/source/Cameri_Theater) and [Israeli Opera](/source/Israeli_Opera).

## Career

During this time, Ivanir had his first film role in the 1988 action film *[Iron Eagle II](/source/Iron_Eagle_II)*, directed by [Sidney J. Furie](/source/Sidney_J._Furie). The film was a Canadian-Israeli-American co-production filmed in Israel with an international cast. Ivanir played a Soviet army serviceman, Mikhail Balyonev.

Following his studies with Nativ, Ivanir joined the [Gesher Theater](/source/Gesher_Theater), a [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv)-based company composed of emigrants from the former USSR. Within two years, Gesher became Israel's top theatrical outfit and was hailed by *The Times* as "one of the six best theatre companies in the world."[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Using his knowledge of multiple languages, Ivanir translated and adapted eight foreign-language plays into Hebrew for the company. He moved to London to study under [Philippe Gaulier](/source/Philippe_Gaulier) at [École Philippe Gaulier](/source/%C3%89cole_Philippe_Gaulier) and [Complicité](/source/Complicit%C3%A9).

Ivanir's first major film role was in [Steven Spielberg](/source/Steven_Spielberg)'s 1993 film *[Schindler's List](/source/Schindler's_List)*, where he played Marcel Goldberg. He worked with Spielberg twice thereafter, first for a cameo appearance in *[The Terminal](/source/The_Terminal)*, then again for *[The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn](/source/The_Adventures_of_Tintin%3A_The_Secret_of_the_Unicorn)*. Ivanir held a pivotal role in [Robert De Niro](/source/Robert_De_Niro)'s 2006 film, *[The Good Shepherd](/source/The_Good_Shepherd_(film))*, for which he won the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival, later landing a role in [Barry Levinson](/source/Barry_Levinson)'s *[What Just Happened](/source/What_Just_Happened_(2008_film))*, this time acting alongside De Niro.

In 2011, he appeared in Universal's *[Johnny English Reborn](/source/Johnny_English_Reborn)*, Universal's *[Big Miracle](/source/Big_Miracle)* and *[360](/source/360_(film))*.

His biggest part to date was on the critically acclaimed *[A Late Quartet](/source/A_Late_Quartet)*, released from RKO pictures in the United States, in fall 2012. The film was voted as one of the *[New York Daily News](/source/Daily_News_(New_York))* 10 top films of the year. Ivanir played Daniel Lerner, the first violin of the string quartet, whose other members are played by [Philip Seymour Hoffman](/source/Philip_Seymour_Hoffman), [Catherine Keener](/source/Catherine_Keener) and [Christopher Walken](/source/Christopher_Walken).

In 2017, he played a [Holocaust survivor](/source/Holocaust_survivors) in the critically acclaimed German-language film *Bye Bye Germany* and recurred on Amazon's *[Transparent](/source/Transparent_(TV_series))*. In August 2019, Amazon Prime released the Israeli show *The Beauty and the Baker*, with Ivanir playing the part of Zvika Granot.

In 2018, he co-starred in the film *[Entebbe](/source/Entebbe_(film))*, directed by [José Padilha](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Padilha), the creator of *Narcos*, and Bill Hader's HBO comedy *[Barry](/source/Barry_(TV_series))*, in which he recurs as three Chechen brothers. In 2024, Ivanir had a supporting role in [Jacques Audiard](/source/Jacques_Audiard)'s film *[Emilia Pérez](/source/Emilia_P%C3%A9rez)*, for which he won the Outstanding Ensemble Performance award along with his co-stars at the 2024 [Mill Valley Film Festival](/source/Mill_Valley_Film_Festival).

## Personal life

Ivanir is married to Maya Raz, an [IDF](/source/Israel_Defense_Forces) broadcaster. His sister-in-law is actress [Romi Aboulafia](/source/Romi_Aboulafia),[2] and his father-in-law is journalist Menashe Raz. He has two daughters, and resides with his family in Los Angeles.
