# Mark Gundrum

**Mark Gundrum** (born March 20, 1970) is an American lawyer and politician serving as a judge of the [Wisconsin Court of Appeals](/source/Wisconsin_Court_of_Appeals) for District II.[1] He previously served as a member of the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) from 1999 to 2010.

## Early life and education

Born in [Milwaukee, Wisconsin](/source/Milwaukee,_Wisconsin), Gundrum graduated from [Catholic Memorial High School](/source/Catholic_Memorial_High_School), where he played for the school's [gridiron football](/source/Gridiron_football) team.[2] He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the [University of Wisconsin–Madison](/source/University_of_Wisconsin%E2%80%93Madison).[3]

## Career

Gundrum served on the [Hales Corners, Wisconsin](/source/Hales_Corners,_Wisconsin) village board. He later worked as a staff attorney for [Rudolph T. Randa](/source/Rudolph_T._Randa), a judge for the [United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_Eastern_District_of_Wisconsin).[4] He joined the [United States Army Reserve](/source/United_States_Army_Reserve) in 2000, and was deployed to Iraq in 2008.[5]

In 1998, Gundrum won the race to succeed [Mary Lazich](/source/Mary_Lazich) in the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) as a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)).[6] In the 2002 election, he defeated fellow state legislator [Marc C. Duff](/source/Marc_C._Duff), who ran against Gundrum due to [redistricting](/source/Redistricting).[7] While serving in the Wisconsin State Assembly, Gundrum worked with [Steven Avery](/source/Steven_Avery), who was exonerated after being falsely convicted of a [sexual assault](/source/Sexual_assault), to pass a criminal justice reform bill.[8] In 2010, Gundrum was elected as a [Circuit Court](/source/Wisconsin_Circuit_Court) judge for [Waukesha County](/source/Waukesha_County). He was soon thereafter appointed by Governor [Scott Walker](/source/Scott_Walker_(politician)) in 2011 to fill a vacancy on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.[9] Gundrum successfully ran for the seat in 2013 and was re-elected in 2019.[10]

Gundrum was named as one of Governor [Scott Walker](/source/Scott_Walker_(politician))'s finalists to replace Justice [David Prosser, Jr.](/source/David_Prosser,_Jr.) on the [Wisconsin Supreme Court](/source/Wisconsin_Supreme_Court) in June 2016.[11]

## Personal life

Gundrum and his wife, Mary, married in 1996. They are Catholic and have ten children, whom they [homeschooled](/source/Homeschooled) through [Wisconsin Virtual Academy](/source/Wisconsin_Virtual_Academy). Their youngest child was born with [encephalocele](/source/Encephalocele) and a [facial cleft](/source/Facial_cleft), which required surgery to correct at [Boston Children's Hospital](/source/Boston_Children's_Hospital).[12] Gundrum appeared in the 2015 Netflix documentary series *[Making a Murderer](/source/Making_a_Murderer)*, detailing Avery's case.
