[Air Vice-Marshal](/source/Air_Vice-Marshal) **Mark Robert Flewin** [CBE](/source/Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) is a senior [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force) who currently serves as Air Officer Commanding [No. 1 Group RAF](/source/No._1_Group_RAF), headquartered at [RAF High Wycombe](/source/RAF_High_Wycombe) in [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire).

## RAF career

From 1 September 1996 to 1 September 1997, Flewin held a one-year commission in the [Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve](/source/Royal_Air_Force_Volunteer_Reserve) as an [acting pilot officer](/source/Acting_pilot_officer).[1][2] He then graduated from university with a [Bachelor of Engineering](/source/Bachelor_of_Engineering) (BEng) degree.[3] He was commissioned in the [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force) (RAF) as a [pilot officer](/source/Pilot_officer) on 5 April 1998.[3][4] He underwent pilot training and was posted to fly the [Jaguar](/source/SEPECAT_Jaguar).[5] After qualifying as a [weapons instructor](/source/Qualified_Weapons_Instructor), he undertook a number of operational tours, including deployment to enforce the [no-fly zones over Iraq](/source/No-fly_zones_over_Iraq).[5] He took command of [1 (Fighter) Squadron](/source/No._1_Squadron_RAF) at [RAF Leuchars](/source/RAF_Leuchars) in September 2012.[6]

Flewin went on to be commander of [No. 903 Expeditionary Air Wing](/source/No._903_Expeditionary_Air_Wing) as part of [Operation Shader](/source/Operation_Shader) in 2014, chief of staff within the Air Staff at the [Ministry of Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(United_Kingdom)) in 2014 and chief of staff, Joint Effects at [Permanent Joint Headquarters](/source/Permanent_Joint_Headquarters) in 2016. He was promoted to [group captain](/source/Group_captain) on 30 August 2016.[7] In 2018, he became station commander at [RAF Coningsby](/source/RAF_Coningsby),[8] and was awarded the [Royal Air Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal](/source/Royal_Air_Force_Long_Service_and_Good_Conduct_Medal).[9]

After completing of the [Higher Command and Staff Course](/source/Higher_Command_and_Staff_Course) at the [Defence Academy](/source/Defence_Academy_of_the_United_Kingdom), he became Head Operations, Plans & Training, [United Kingdom Space Command](/source/United_Kingdom_Space_Command) at [RAF High Wycombe](/source/RAF_High_Wycombe) in May 2021.[10] He was appointed Air Officer Commanding [No. 1 Group RAF](/source/No._1_Group_RAF) in January 2023.[11] Then, in March 2025, he became [Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff, Military Strategy](/source/Assistant_Chief_of_the_Defence_Staff), based in the Ministry of Defence.[12]

Flewin was appointed a [Commander of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (CBE) in the [2019 New Year Honours](/source/2019_New_Year_Honours).[13]
