Born in Rome, Vulpiani began his career as assistant of the operator [Enrico Chroscisky](/source/Enrico_Chroscisky).<ref name="vdfv">Stefano Masi. Recco, Le Mani, 2007, pp. 607-608. {{ISBN|88-8012-387-4}}.</ref> In the fifties he worked mainly in the field of documentary films, also working as a director.<ref name="vdfv" /> In 1965, with a segment of the anthology film ''[Marcia nuziale](/source/Marcia_nuziale)'', Vulpiani started a critically appreciated collaboration with the director [Marco Ferreri](/source/Marco_Ferreri) that includes the celebrated [cult film](/source/cult_film)s ''[Dillinger Is Dead](/source/Dillinger_Is_Dead)'' and ''[La Grande Bouffe](/source/La_Grande_Bouffe)''.<ref name="vdfv" /> In the late sixties he collaborated with the [postmodern](/source/Postmodernism) painter [Mario Schifano](/source/Mario_Schifano) in his three [experimental film](/source/experimental_film)s.<ref name="vdfv" /> In the seventies he worked, among others, with [Valentino Orsini](/source/Valentino_Orsini), [Damiano Damiani](/source/Damiano_Damiani), [Andrea Barzini](/source/Andrea_Barzini),  [Mario Monicelli](/source/Mario_Monicelli) and [Carlo Lizzani](/source/Carlo_Lizzani).<ref name="vdfv" /> Starting from the eighties Vulpiani focused into less ambitious works, except for several collaborations with [Gabriele Lavia](/source/Gabriele_Lavia).<ref name="vdfv" />
