# Mario Passani

**Mario Passani Buggiani**, also known as **Passani I** (1891 – 2 November 1981[1]), was a Spanish [footballer](/source/Association_football) of Italian ancestry who played as a [forward](/source/Forward_(association_football)), spending most of his career with [FC Espanya](/source/FC_Espanya_de_Barcelona), but also enjoying bried spells at [Racing de Madrid](/source/Racing_de_Madrid) and [FC Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona).[2] His brother [Roberto](/source/Roberto_Passani) also played for Espanya.

## Club career

Born in [Catalonia](/source/Catalonia), he began his career at his hometown club [FC Espanya](/source/FC_Espanya_de_Barcelona) in the late-1900s, playing with them for nearly a decade. He was a member of the team's attacking quintet in the 1910s, which also had [Pantaleón Salvó](/source/Pantale%C3%B3n_Salv%C3%B3), [Antonio Baró](/source/Antonio_Bar%C3%B3) and the Jaimes ([Bellavista](/source/Jaime_Bellavista) and [Villena](/source/Jaime_Villena)), and even though the team's main source of power was its backline with [Hermenegild Casellas](/source/Hermenegild_Casellas) and [Eduardo Reguera](/source/Eduardo_Reguera), he played an important role in the team's rise to national dominance, competing head-to-head against the likes of [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) and [Espanyol](/source/RCD_Espanyol) and winning three [Catalan championships](/source/Catalan_football_championship) (1912–13, 1913–14 and 1916–17), the [1914 Pyrenees Cup](/source/1914_Pyrenees_Cup) and he also was pivotal in helping Espanya reach the [1914 Copa del Rey Final](/source/1914_Copa_del_Rey_Final), which still stands as the only Copa del Rey Final of the club's history, but they lost 1–2 to [Athletic Bilbao](/source/Athletic_Bilbao) (then known as Athletic Club), courtesy of a brace from [Severino Zuazo](/source/Severino_Zuazo).[3] He also helped Espanya win the [1914 Pyrenees Cup](/source/1914_Pyrenees_Cup), netting the only goal of a 1–0 victory over [Universitary SC](/source/Universitary_SC) and featuring in the [final](/source/1914_Pyrenees_Cup#Final) as they beat [Cométe et Simot](/source/La_Com%C3%A8te_et_Simiot_Bordeaux) 3–1.[4]

At the end of his career, he often moved to [Madrid](/source/Madrid) for professional reasons, and while in the capital he played with [Racing de Madrid](/source/Racing_de_Madrid) in two very brief stints in 1917 and 1918.[2] He also enjoyed a brief spell at [FC Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) in 1917.[2] He retired with FC Espanya at the end of the 1918–19 season.

## International career

Like many other [FC Espanya](/source/FC_Espanya_de_Barcelona) players of that time, Passani was eligible to play for the [Catalonia national team](/source/Catalonia_national_football_team), earning one [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)#Association_football) in a [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game) against [FC Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) on 9 February 1910, which ended in a 2–3 loss.[5]
