**Mario Hermoso Canseco** (Spanish pronunciation: [\[ˈmaɾjo eɾˈmoso kanˈseko\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Spanish); born 18 June 1995) is a Spanish professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [centre-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Centre-back) or a [left-back](/source/Defender_(association_football)#Full-back) for [Serie A](/source/Serie_A) club [Roma](/source/AS_Roma).[2]

Developed at [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_CF), he made his [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) debut with [Espanyol](/source/RCD_Espanyol) and, in 2019, signed for [Atlético Madrid](/source/Atl%C3%A9tico_Madrid), where he totalled 174 games in five seasons and won the [2020–21 national championship](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_La_Liga).[3]

Hermoso earned his first full [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)) for [Spain](/source/Spain_national_football_team) in 2018.

## Club career

### Real Madrid

Born in [Madrid](/source/Madrid), Hermoso joined [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_CF)'s youth setup in 2005, aged 11, after starting out at [EF Concepción](/source/EF_Concepci%C3%B3n).[4] On 28 September 2012, while still a youth, he appeared with the first team in that year's [Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu](/source/Trofeo_Santiago_Bernab%C3%A9u), coming on as a second-half [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)) in an 8–0 rout of [Millonarios](/source/Millonarios_F.C.).[5]

In summer 2014, Hermoso was promoted to the [C side](/source/Real_Madrid_C) in the [Tercera División](/source/Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n). On 16 July 2015, he was loaned to [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) club [Real Valladolid](/source/Real_Valladolid) in a [season](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n)-long deal.[6]

Hermoso made his professional debut on 22 August 2015, starting in a 1–0 away loss against [Córdoba](/source/C%C3%B3rdoba_CF).[7] Upon returning, he was assigned to [Real's reserves](/source/Real_Madrid_Castilla) in the [Segunda División B](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B).[8]

### Espanyol

On 12 July 2017, Hermoso signed a three-year deal with [Espanyol](/source/RCD_Espanyol).[9] His maiden appearance in [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) took place on 9 September, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5–0 defeat at [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona).[10] He scored his first goal in the competition the following 28 January, but also put two past [his own net](/source/Own_goal) in a 3–2 loss away to [Leganés](/source/CD_Legan%C3%A9s).[11]

### Atlético Madrid

On 18 July 2019, with only one year left in his contract, Hermoso agreed to a five-year deal with [Atlético Madrid](/source/Atl%C3%A9tico_Madrid) for €25 million plus €4 million in add-ons; Espanyol also retained 20% of any future sale of the player, with half of the fee being paid to Real Madrid.[12] He made his league debut on 18 August, playing 28 minutes in the 1–0 home win against [Getafe](/source/Getafe_CF).[13]

Hermoso scored his first league goal on 22 December 2020, opening a 2–0 away victory over [Real Sociedad](/source/Real_Sociedad).[14] He contributed 31 appearances during [the season](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_La_Liga), as the club won its 11th domestic league.[15]

On 7 September 2022, Hermoso scored a [last-minute goal](/source/Last-minute_goal) to open a 2–1 home defeat of [Porto](/source/FC_Porto) in the [group phase](/source/2022%E2%80%9323_UEFA_Champions_League) of the [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League); later, he committed a [penalty](/source/Penalty_kick_(association_football)) that resulted in [Mateus Uribe](/source/Mateus_Uribe)'s equaliser, before [Antoine Griezmann](/source/Antoine_Griezmann)'s winner.[16]

Hermoso left the [Metropolitano Stadium](/source/Metropolitano_Stadium) in June 2024, after his contract expired.[3]

### Roma

On 2 September 2024, Hermoso signed with [Roma](/source/AS_Roma) in Italy.[17] He scored his first goal on 12 December, closing the 3–0 win over [Braga](/source/S.C._Braga) in the [league phase](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_UEFA_Europa_League) of the [UEFA Europa League](/source/UEFA_Europa_League).[18]

On 31 January 2025, Hermoso joined [Bayer Leverkusen](/source/Bayer_04_Leverkusen) on loan until the end of [the campaign](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_Bundesliga).[19] He returned to Roma for the 2025–26 season, scoring his first [Serie A](/source/Serie_A) goal in a 2–1 victory over [Parma](/source/Parma_Calcio_1913) on 29 October 2025.[20] On 26 May 2026, he extended his contract with the club until 2027.[21]

## International career

After playing for [Spain at under-19 level](/source/Spain_national_under-19_football_team), Hermoso was first called by the [full side](/source/Spain_national_football_team) on 8 November 2018, for matches against [Croatia](/source/Croatia_national_football_team) and [Bosnia and Herzegovina](/source/Bosnia_and_Herzegovina_national_football_team).[22] He made his debut in the latter fixture, featuring the full 90 minutes in the 1–0 [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game#Association_football) win in [Las Palmas](/source/Las_Palmas).[23]
