Born in [Montevideo](/source/Montevideo), [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay), on February 5, 1947, while his actor parents were on tour he has [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay)an citizenship. He is one of the most important figures of the performing arts of Spain and began his acting career in [University](/source/University_of_Barcelona) and took it up seriously after he failed to complete the law course he was enrolled in.

He comes from a large acting family. His father, Manuel Gas, was a singer and actor. His mother, Anna Cabré, (sister of actor [Mario Cabré](/source/Mario_Cabr%C3%A9)), was a dancer. His daughter [Miranda Gas](/source/Miranda_Gas) is also a well known Spanish actress.

He is married to theatrical actress [Vicky Peña](/source/Vicky_Pe%C3%B1a), and they have two children, Orestes and [Miranda Gas](/source/Miranda_Gas).

Mario Gas, has directed more than fifty plays. He was also a stage Director of Opera productions like ''[La Traviata](/source/La_Traviata)'' and ''[Un ballo in maschera](/source/Un_ballo_in_maschera)'' by [Giuseppe Verdi](/source/Giuseppe_Verdi); ''[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)'' by [Giacomo Puccini](/source/Giacomo_Puccini) and ''[L'elisir d'amore](/source/L'elisir_d'amore)'' by [Gaetano Donizetti](/source/Gaetano_Donizetti).
