# Mario Faubert

**Mario Faubert** (born December 2, 1954) is a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) retired professional [ice hockey](/source/Ice_hockey) [defenceman](/source/Defenceman) and politician.

## Hockey career

Faubert played two seasons at [Saint Louis University](/source/Saint_Louis_University_(United_States)) before being drafted by the [Pittsburgh Penguins](/source/Pittsburgh_Penguins) in the [1974 NHL amateur draft](/source/1974_NHL_amateur_draft). His early career was split between the Penguins and the [AHL](/source/American_Hockey_League)'s [Hershey Bears](/source/Hershey_Bears). He played his first full season in [1981](/source/1980%E2%80%9381_NHL_season), and finished the year first among Pittsburgh defenceman in scoring. On November 18, 1981 Faubert suffered a tragic career ending leg injury in a game versus [St. Louis](/source/St._Louis_Blues).[1]

## Political career

In February 2003, the [Parti libéral du Québec](/source/Parti_lib%C3%A9ral_du_Qu%C3%A9bec) announced that Mario Faubert would be its candidate in the riding of [Beauharnois](/source/Beauharnois_(provincial_electoral_district)) for the upcoming [Quebec general election](/source/2003_Quebec_general_election). He was named the liberal candidate after the [Beauharnois-Huntingdon](/source/Beauharnois-Huntingdon) district was split in two and incumbent [André Chenail](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Chenail) chose to ride in [Huntingdon](/source/Huntingdon_(Quebec_provincial_electoral_district)). He got 42.77% of the vote but lost by 639 votes to [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) candidate [Serge Deslières](/source/Serge_Desli%C3%A8res).
