# Mariental Urban

**Mariental Urban** is a [constituency](/source/Constituencies_of_Namibia) in the [Hardap](/source/Hardap_Region) region of [Namibia](/source/Namibia). It comprises the town of [Mariental](/source/Mariental%2C_Namibia) and the surrounding area, covering an area of 5,915 km2 (2,284 sq mi). Mariental Urban had a population of 15,557 in 2011, up from 13,109 in 2001.[1] As of 2020[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mariental_Urban&action=edit) the constituency had 10,480 registered voters.[2]

## Politics

Mariental is traditionally a stronghold of the [South West Africa People's Organization](/source/South_West_Africa_People's_Organization) (SWAPO) party. In the [2004 regional election](/source/2004_Namibian_local_and_regional_elections), SWAPO candidate Barakias Namwandi received 2,729 of the 4,037 votes cast and became councillor.[3]

The [2015 regional elections](/source/Namibian_local_and_regional_elections%2C_2015) were won by Nico Herman Mungenga of [SWAPO](/source/SWAPO) with 2,251 votes. Regina Kuhlman of the [Democratic Turnhalle Alliance](/source/Democratic_Turnhalle_Alliance) (DTA) came second with 247 votes, followed by Reginald Poulton of the [Rally for Democracy and Progress](/source/Rally_for_Democracy_and_Progress_(Namibia)) (RDP, 151 votes).[4] The [2020 regional election](/source/2020_Namibian_local_and_regional_elections) was won by Petrus Esterhuizen of the [Landless People's Movement](/source/Landless_People's_Movement_(Namibia)) (LPM, a new party registered in 2018). He obtained 2,015 votes. Fransina Fredrika Basson (SWAPO) came second with 1,409 votes.[5]
