==Life and career==
Cardinal was born in [French Algeria](/source/French_Algeria) and was the sister of the film director [Pierre Cardinal](/source/Pierre_Cardinal). She graduated with a degree in philosophy from the [Sorbonne](/source/University_of_Paris) and married the French playwright, actor and director [Jean-Pierre Ronfard](/source/Jean-Pierre_Ronfard) in 1953.<ref name=Johnson>{{harvnb|Johnson|2001}}</ref> They had three children; Alice, Benoit, and Benedict. From 1953 to 1960, Cardinal taught philosophy at schools in [Salonica](/source/Thessaloniki), Lisbon, Vienna and Montreal.<ref name=Johnson/>

She published her debut novel, ''Écoutez la Mer'' (''Listen to the Sea''), in 1962. During the 1960s, she wrote three more novels and ventured into film, appearing in [Jean-Luc Godard](/source/Jean-Luc_Godard)'s ''[Deux Ou Trois Choses Que Je Sais D'elle](/source/Two_or_Three_Things_I_Know_About_Her)''<ref name="Johnson" /> and playing Mouchette's mother in [Robert Bresson](/source/Robert_Bresson)'s film ''[Mouchette](/source/Mouchette)''.<ref>{{cite web |title=Mouchette |url=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061996/?ref_=nm_knf_t4 |website=IMDb |access-date=1 September 2014}}</ref>

In 1972, Cardinal published ''La Clé Sur La Porte'' (''The Key of the Door''), followed by ''[Les Mots Pour Le Dire](/source/The_Words_to_Say_It)'' (''The Words to Say It'') in 1975; these two novels were best sellers and established her reputation.<ref name=Johnson/> ''Les Mots Pour Le Dire'' also introduced Cardinal to English-speaking readers,<ref name=McWhorter>{{harvnb|McWhorter|1984}}</ref> with Pat Goodheart's translation published in the United States in 1983 and in the United Kingdom the following year.
