**Maria Margarida Ferreira Marques**[1] (born 3 February 1954) is a [Portuguese politician](/source/Politics_of_Portugal) of the [Socialist Party](/source/Socialist_Party_(Portugal)) who served as a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament) between [2019](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election) and [2024](/source/2024_European_Parliament_election).[2]

## Early career

In 1994 Marques moved to Brussels where she started working for the [European Commission](/source/European_Commission), first in the [Directorate-General for Education and Culture](/source/Directorate-General_for_Education%2C_Youth%2C_Sport_and_Culture) (DG EAC), then in the [Directorate-General for Communication](/source/Directorate-General_for_Communication) (DG COMM). She subsequently held the position of European Commission representative in Portugal from 2005 to 2011.

## Career in national politics

From [2015](/source/2015_Portuguese_legislative_election) until 2019, Marques was a member of the [Parliament of Portugal](/source/Assembly_of_the_Republic_(Portugal)). During that time, she served as State Secretary for European Affairs in the [government](/source/XXI_Constitutional_Government_of_Portugal) of [Prime Minister](/source/Prime_Minister_of_Portugal) [António Costa](/source/Ant%C3%B3nio_Costa) from 2015 until 2017.

## Member of the European Parliament

Marques has been a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament) since the [2019 European elections](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election). In parliament, she has since been serving on the [Committee on Budgets](/source/Committee_on_Budgets). In this capacity, she was the parliament's [co-rapporteur](/source/Rapporteur) (alongside [Jan Olbrycht](/source/Jan_Olbrycht)) on the European Union's [Multiannual Financial Framework](/source/Multiannual_Financial_Framework) (MFF) for 2021–2027.[3] In 2020, she also joined the [Committee on International Trade](/source/Committee_on_International_Trade).

In addition to her committee assignments, Marques is part of the parliament's delegations for relations with [China](/source/China) and the [Parliamentary Assembly](/source/Euro-Mediterranean_Parliamentary_Assembly) of the [Union for the Mediterranean](/source/Union_for_the_Mediterranean).[4] She is also a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on Anti-Racism and Diversity.[5]
