Shipp earned her [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in English and biology in 1975 from [Southern Methodist University](/source/Southern_Methodist_University). Following this, she completed her [medical degree](/source/medical_degree) at [Washington University School of Medicine](/source/Washington_University_School_of_Medicine) in 1979. Upon graduating, Shipp joined the faculty at [Dana–Farber Cancer Institute](/source/Dana%E2%80%93Farber_Cancer_Institute) and [Harvard Medical School](/source/Harvard_Medical_School).
