# Margaret Currin

**Margaret Person Currin** is an American lawyer and academic. In 1988, she became the first woman to be appointed as a [United States Attorney](/source/United_States_Attorney) in North Carolina, serving the [Eastern District](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_Eastern_District_of_North_Carolina). She was on faculty at [Campbell University](/source/Campbell_University)'s [Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law](/source/Norman_Adrian_Wiggins_School_of_Law) for thirty-one years.

## Early life and education

Currin grew up in [Oxford, North Carolina](/source/Oxford,_North_Carolina) and attended [J. F. Webb High School](/source/J._F._Webb_High_School). She graduated from [Meredith College](/source/Meredith_College) in 1972.[1] She was a member of the charter class at [Campbell University](/source/Campbell_University)'s [Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law](/source/Norman_Adrian_Wiggins_School_of_Law), where she served as charter editor of the law review and was elected into [Phi Kappa Phi](/source/Phi_Kappa_Phi).[2] She graduated [cum laude](/source/Cum_laude) from Campbell in 1979.[2][3] Currin went on to complete graduate work in legal studies at [Georgetown University Law Center](/source/Georgetown_University_Law_Center).[2]

## Career

Currin worked for local and state governments. She clerked for the [United States Attorney for the District of Columbia](/source/United_States_Attorney_for_the_District_of_Columbia) and served as legislative director and counsel to Senator [John Tower](/source/John_Tower).[2][1]

She was appointed as [United States Attorney](/source/United_States_Attorney) for the [Eastern District of North Carolina](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_Eastern_District_of_North_Carolina) by President [Ronald Reagan](/source/Ronald_Reagan) in 1988.[4][3] She was the first woman to serve as a United States Attorney in North Carolina.[5][6] Currin was succeeded by [Janice Cole](/source/Janice_Cole) following her resignation in 1993.[4][7]

Currin worked for 31 years at [Campbell University](/source/Campbell_University) as a legal educator and law school administrator.[4] She was a law professor, was the founding director of the university's externship program, and served as Assistant Dean for External Relations and Associate Dean for Academic, Student, and Administrative Affairs.[4][2] She retired in 2016.[3]

She is a founding member of Diligence LLC and a lifetime member of National Association of Former United States Attorneys (NAFUSA).[4] She served as president of NAFUSA from 2003 to 2004.[4]

In 2011, she joined the North Carolina Rules Review Commission and later served as vice-chairman and chairman.[4][8] She served on the board of directors for the [North Carolina Bar Association](/source/North_Carolina_Bar_Association)'s BarCARES and was elected to the [Wake County](/source/Wake_County,_North_Carolina) Bar Association/Tenth Judicial District Board of Directors in 2015.[3] She was chairwoman of the Wake County Board of Elections and served on the [Help America Vote Act](/source/Help_America_Vote_Act) Committee with the [North Carolina State Board of Elections](/source/North_Carolina_State_Board_of_Elections).[3] Currin was the general counsel for the [North Carolina Republican Party](/source/North_Carolina_Republican_Party) and represented political committees before the [Federal Election Commission](/source/Federal_Election_Commission).[1]

In 2015, she was awarded the [Order of the Long Leaf Pine](/source/Order_of_the_Long_Leaf_Pine) by Governor [Pat McCrory](/source/Pat_McCrory).[9]

## Personal life

She is married to former United States Attorney and [North Carolina Superior Court](/source/North_Carolina_Superior_Court) Judge [Sam Currin](/source/Sam_Currin).[3] They have one son, [S. Thomas Currin II](/source/S._Thomas_Currin_II).[3]

She lives in [Raleigh, North Carolina](/source/Raleigh,_North_Carolina) with her husband and is a member of [Hayes Barton Baptist Church](/source/Hayes_Barton_Baptist_Church).[10]
