# Marcus Trumer

**Marcus Trumer** (April 25, 1842 – March 11, 1880) was an [Austrian American](/source/Austrian_Americans) immigrant and [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) politician. He was a member of the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) for one term, representing southeast [Dodge County](/source/Dodge_County,_Wisconsin) in the [1871 session](/source/24th_Wisconsin_Legislature).

## Biography

Marcus Trumer was born on April 25, 1842, in [Stuben](/source/Oberwart_District), in the [Austrian Empire](/source/Austrian_Empire). He received a common school education and emigrated to the United States. He moved to [Erin, Wisconsin](/source/Erin,_Wisconsin), in 1856.[1]

He was [drafted](/source/Conscription_in_the_United_States) into the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army) during the second year of the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), and enrolled as a private in Company K of the [34th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment](/source/34th_Wisconsin_Infantry_Regiment). He was then transferred to Company F, where he was promoted to sergeant.[2] The 34th Wisconsin Infantry didn't see any combat, they were stationed as a garrison in Kentucky for their nine months of service.[3]

At the expiration of the nine months enlistment for the 34th Wisconsin Infantry, Trumer re-enlisted as a veteran with the [35th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment](/source/35th_Wisconsin_Infantry_Regiment) and served as a sergeant in Company K for the remainder of the war.[4] The 35th Wisconsin Infantry served mostly in Louisiana and participated in the [Battle of Spanish Fort](/source/Battle_of_Spanish_Fort) in Alabama.[5]

After the war, Trumer moved to the town of [Rubicon](/source/Rubicon,_Wisconsin), in [Dodge County, Wisconsin](/source/Dodge_County,_Wisconsin), where he purchased and ran a hotel. There he was elected to local offices, including town clerk and justice of the peace. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1870, and later that year he was elected to the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly), running on the [Democratic Party](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) ticket. He represented Dodge County's 4th Assembly district, which then comprised roughly the southeast corner of the county.[1] He did not run for another term in 1871.

He died in 1880, only 37 years old. His death was caused by heart disease exacerbated by [Rheumatism](/source/Rheumatism) attributed to his war service.
