'''Marcus Appuleius''' (c. 55 BC – c. 15 BC) was a nephew of the Roman emperor [Augustus](/source/Augustus) and [Roman consul](/source/Roman_consul) in 20 BC with [Publius Silius Nerva](/source/Publius_Silius_Nerva) as his colleague.<ref>[Attilio Degrassi](/source/Attilio_Degrassi), ''I fasti consolari dell'Impero Romano dal 30 avanti Cristo al 613 dopo Cristo'' (Rome, 1952), p. 4</ref>

==Biography==
Marcus Appuleius is postulated to have been the son of [Sextus Appuleius](/source/Sextus_Appuleius) and [Octavia the Elder](/source/Octavia_the_Elder), therefore making him related to the [emperor](/source/Roman_emperor) [Augustus](/source/Augustus) through his grandfather [Gaius Octavius](/source/Gaius_Octavius_(praetor_61_BC)).<ref>Syme, p. 37</ref> For many years associated with the [quaestor](/source/quaestor) of [Asia](/source/Asia_(Roman_province)) in 45 BC who joined [Marcus Junius Brutus](/source/Marcus_Junius_Brutus_the_Younger) after the assassination of [Julius Caesar](/source/Julius_Caesar), this is now held to have been his uncle of the same name.<ref>Broughton, p. 20</ref>

In 23/22 BC, Marcus Appuleius was a [legate](/source/Legatus) at [Tridentum](/source/Trento).<ref>Syme, p. 331</ref> He was next elected [consul](/source/Roman_consul) in 20 BC, while Augustus was away from Rome. Unlike the elections of 21 BC and 19 BC, these were not interrupted by electoral discord.<ref>Syme, p. 42</ref>

There is no record of him taking any other post after his consulship. It has therefore been speculated that Marcus Appuleius died sometime shortly after his consulship, and definitely by the time that [Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa](/source/Marcus_Vipsanius_Agrippa) had died in 12 BC, as Appuleius' brother [Sextus Appuleius](/source/Sextus_Appuleius), the consul of 29 BC, was present at the funeral, but Marcus was not.<ref>Syme, p. 153</ref>

[Ronald Syme](/source/Ronald_Syme) has speculated that he may have been married to his half-cousin [Claudia Marcella Minor](/source/Claudia_Marcella_Minor).<ref>{{Cite book|title=The Augustan Aristocracy|last=Syme|first=Ronald|publisher=Clarendon Press|year=1989|isbn=9780198147312|pages=151|edition=new, illustrated, reworked|series=Clarendon paperbacks|chapter=Two Nieces of Augustus}}</ref>
