# Marcola, Oregon

**Marcola** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) (CDP) in [Lane County](/source/Lane_County,_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), United States. The community is located on the [Mohawk River](/source/Mohawk_River_(Oregon)) northeast of [Springfield](/source/Springfield,_Oregon).

As of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), Marcola had a population of 580.[2]

## History

The post office at this location was established in 1876 and originally called "Isabel" for early settler Isabel Applegate.[3] In 1899-1900, a railroad was built through the [Mohawk Valley](/source/Mohawk_Valley_(Oregon)) and a station named Marcola was established near the post office.[3] Marcola was a name made up to honor Mary Cole, the wife of the town's founder, Columbus Cole.[3][4] In 1901, the post office name was changed to agree with the name of the station.[3]

The 1938 [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places)-listed Earnest Bridge, a [covered bridge](/source/Covered_bridge) in the Marcola area, was featured in the 1965 [James Stewart](/source/James_Stewart) film *[Shenandoah](/source/Shenandoah_(film))*.[5]

## Education

Most of Marcola CDP is in the [Marcola School District](/source/Marcola_School_District),[6] which operates [Mohawk High School](/source/Mohawk_High_School_(Marcola,_Oregon)).

Portions are in the [Springfield School District 19](/source/Springfield_School_District_19).[6]

Lane County is in the [Lane Community College](/source/Lane_Community_College) district.[7]

## Notable people

- [Courtney Love](/source/Courtney_Love) (born 1964), musician and actress, lived with her family at a [commune](/source/Intentional_community) in Marcola[8]
