**Marcello Mimmi** (18 July 1882 – 6 March 1961) was an Italian [Cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)) of the [Roman Catholic Church](/source/Roman_Catholic_Church). He served as [Archbishop of Naples](/source/Archdiocese_of_Naples) from 1952 to 1957, and [Secretary](/source/Secretary) of the [Sacred Consistorial Congregation](/source/Congregation_for_Bishops) from 1957 until his death. Mimmi was elevated to the [cardinalate](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)) in 1953 by [Pope Pius XII](/source/Pope_Pius_XII).

## Life and church

Marcello Mimi was born in [San Pietro in Casale](/source/San_Pietro_in_Casale) and studied at the [seminary](/source/Seminary) in [Bologna](/source/Bologna) before being [ordained](/source/Holy_Orders) to the [priesthood](/source/Priesthood_(Catholic_Church)) on 23 December 1905. He then did [pastoral](/source/Parish_(Catholic_Church)) work and taught at the [Bologna](/source/Bologna) seminary until 1930. He was elevated to a [Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness](/source/Monsignor) on 19 November 1919, and later named [rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of the Regional Seminary of [Romagna](/source/Romagna).

On 30 June 1930, Mimmi was appointed [Bishop of Crema](/source/Bishop_of_Crema) by [Pope Pius XI](/source/Pope_Pius_XI). He received his [episcopal consecration](/source/Bishop_(Catholic_Church)) on the following 25 July from Cardinal [Giovanni Nasalli Rocca di Corneliano](/source/Giovanni_Nasalli_Rocca_di_Corneliano), with Bishops Ettore Lodi and [Giovanni Franzini](/source/Giovanni_Franzoni) serving as [co-consecrators](/source/Consecrator). Mimmi was later named [Archbishop of Bari](/source/Archbishop_of_Bari) on 31 July 1933, and [Archbishop of Naples](/source/Archdiocese_of_Naples) on 30 August 1952.

[Pope Pius XII](/source/Pope_Pius_XII) created him [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)) of [S. Callisto](/source/San_Callisto) in the [consistory](/source/Papal_consistory) of 12 January 1953. Mimmi served as [papal legate](/source/Papal_legate) to several ecclesiastical gatherings from 1955 to 1960.

On 15 December 1957, the Cardinal was made [Secretary](/source/Secretary) of the [Sacred Consistorial Congregation](/source/Congregation_for_Bishops) in the [Roman Curia](/source/Roman_Curia).[1] Mimmi later chose to be advanced to the rank of [Cardinal Bishop](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)), receiving the [suburbicarian see](/source/Suburbicarian_diocese) of [Sabina e Poggio Mirteto](/source/Bishop_of_Sabina) on 9 June 1958. He was also one of the [cardinal electors](/source/Cardinal_electors_in_Papal_conclave%2C_1958) who participated in the [1958 papal conclave](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1958) that selected [Pope John XXIII](/source/Pope_John_XXIII).

Mimmi died in Rome, at age 78. He is buried in the Cathedral of [Magliano Sabina](/source/Magliano_Sabina).
