# Marcel de Chollet

**Marcel de Chollet** or **Marcel Chollet** (26 October 1855, [Geneva](/source/Geneva) – 30 July 1924, Geneva) was a [French speaking](/source/Swiss_French) Swiss painter of the [Belle Époque](/source/Belle_%C3%89poque). He is mainly known for his ceiling places in public buildings, hotels and casinos in Switzerland and Paris, which can be assigned to both [naturalism](/source/Naturalism_(visual_art)) and [impressionism](/source/Impressionism).

## Life

The son of the architect Charles Joseph de Chollet,[1] little is known of de Chollet's youth. He left Switzerland in 1880 to study at the academy in Paris. He worked in the studios of Borchgrave and Bidan,[2] where he graduated in decorative painting. He then joined [Pierre-Victor Galland](/source/Pierre-Victor_Galland)'s decorative painting course at the [École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts](/source/%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_des_Beaux-Arts)[2] and settled in Paris for good at a studio at 17 rue Victor-Massé in [Montmartre](/source/Montmartre).

He successfully exhibited still lifes and drawings in Swiss salons between 1883 and 1898 – these works are now in the [Musée d’art et d’histoire (Fribourg)](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_d%E2%80%99art_et_d%E2%80%99histoire_(Fribourg)), [Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Geneva)](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_d'Art_et_d'Histoire_(Geneva)) and the [Musée Rath](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_Rath) among others.[1] In Paris his work was exhibited at the [Salon des artistes français](/source/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_des_Artistes_Fran%C3%A7ais). In 1903 Marcel de Chollet was honoured with a *mention* at the [Paris Salon](/source/Paris_Salon). He moved away from naturalism in his still lifes, influenced by the portraits of women then being produced in Paris by [Claude Monet](/source/Claude_Monet) and [Édouard Manet](/source/%C3%89douard_Manet).

His first interior commission was in 1885 for the audience hall of the [Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland](/source/Federal_Supreme_Court_of_Switzerland) in [Lausanne](/source/Lausanne). In 1895 he painted the main hall at the renowned [Hôtel des Alpes-Grand Hôtel](/source/H%C3%B4tel_des_Alpes-Grand_H%C3%B4tel) in [Territet](/source/Territet). Further orders followed, though his real breakthrough work was an allegorical scheme for the presidential offices in the [Federal Palace of Switzerland](/source/Federal_Palace_of_Switzerland) in [Bern](/source/Bern). In 1905 he painted the reading room at the [Palais de Rumine](/source/Palais_de_Rumine) in Lausanne and a year later that in the [Montreux Palace](/source/Fairmont_Le_Montreux_Palace) hotel in [Montreux](/source/Montreux). In 1908 he produced the scheme in the 'Salle del Castillo' at *Casino du Rivage* in [Vevey](/source/Vevey).[1] However, his work on the '[Grands Magasins du Louvre](/source/Le_Louvre_des_Antiquaires)' was destroyed in 1974.
