'''Marcel-André Baschet''' (5 August 1862 – 28 December 1941) was a French portrait painter, notable for his numerous portraits of the [presidents](/source/President_of_France) of the [French Third Republic](/source/French_Third_Republic).

== Biography ==

He was born in [Gagny](/source/Gagny) ([Seine-et-Oise](/source/Seine-et-Oise)), the second son of the art editor {{ill|Ludovic Baschet|fr}}, editor of Panorama and the Revue illustrée. His brother [René](/source/Ren%C3%A9_Baschet) was the art critic for [Salonsavant](/source/French_art_salons_and_academies), and was editor of the magazine ''[L'Illustration](/source/L'Illustration)'' from 1904 to the first half of the 20th century. At 17, Marcel entered the [Académie Julian](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_Julian)<ref>Charles Saunier, ''"La peinture au XXe siècle"'', Larousse, Coll. Anthologie d'art français, pp.II, 3.</ref> in the studio of [Jules Lefebvre](/source/Jules_Joseph_Lefebvre). A student at the [École des beaux-arts de Paris](/source/%C3%89cole_nationale_sup%C3%A9rieure_des_beaux-arts) in the studio of [Gustave Boulanger](/source/Gustave_Boulanger), in 1883 he won the [Grand Prix de Rome](/source/Grand_Prix_de_Rome) for painting for ''[Oedipus](/source/Oedipus) curses his son [Polynices](/source/Polynices)'', and became a pensionist at the [Villa Médicis](/source/Villa_M%C3%A9dicis) in [Rome](/source/Rome) from 1883 to 1887.

On 3 January 1888, he married Jeanne Guillemeteau, and they had two children, one son and one daughter. He became a teacher at the Académie Julian in 1889. From 1900, he spent a number of years as a teacher to [Princess Mathilde](/source/Mathilde-L%C3%A9tizia_Bonaparte). From 1907 to 1941, he had a shop at 21 [Quai Voltaire](/source/Quai_Voltaire) in Paris, where a commemorative plaque was placed after his death. He won the médaille d'honneur in 1908 for his portrait of [Henri Rochefort](/source/Victor_Henri_Rochefort%2C_Marquis_de_Rochefort-Lu%C3%A7ay), and his portrait of [Claude Debussy](/source/Claude_Debussy) was exhibited around the world. He was awarded the Knight of the [Légion d'honneur](/source/L%C3%A9gion_d'honneur) in 1898, and then in 1913, he was elected a member of the [Académie des beaux-arts](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_des_beaux-arts_(France)).

His works are held in a number of private collections and museums, including the [Musée d'Orsay](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_d'Orsay) and [Château de Versailles](/source/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Versailles). His younger brother Jacques (1872–1952) was a historian, art critic, artistic director, and editor of the magazine ''L'Illustration'', and director of a national company.
