He was first attracted to acting at age eight when he saw an audition sign for *[The Sound of Music](/source/The_Sound_of_Music)* and said to his father "I wouldn't mind doing that." Although he did not get the part, he was keen to get involved, and joined the [National Youth Music Theatre](/source/National_Youth_Music_Theatre).[1] When he was 12, one of the theatre's directors, Jeremy James Taylor, put Pickering forward for the part of Young Masbath in *Sleepy Hollow*, directed by [Tim Burton](/source/Tim_Burton).[1] Pickering also attended [South Hunsley Secondary School](/source/South_Hunsley_School). ## Career Pickering performed in *[Bugsy Malone](/source/Bugsy_Malone)*; as the [Artful Dodger](/source/Artful_Dodger) in *[Oliver Twist](/source/Oliver_Twist)*;[2] and in *[The Long and the Short and the Tall](/source/The_Long_and_the_Short_and_the_Tall_(play))* on various London stages before starring opposite [Helen Mirren](/source/Helen_Mirren) and [Julie Walters](/source/Julie_Walters) in *[Calendar Girls](/source/Calendar_Girls)* in 2003. He then returned to the stage as [Joseph Merrick](/source/Joseph_Merrick) in *[The Elephant Man](/source/The_Elephant_Man_(play))*. The production did not use prosthetics, to encourage the audience to see Merrick's struggle and emotions.[1] Pickering's most significant television role to date was in [Peter Kay](/source/Peter_Kay)'s 2008 talent show parody *[Britain's Got the Pop Factor...](/source/Peter_Kay's_Britain's_Got_the_Pop_Factor..._and_Possibly_a_New_Celebrity_Jesus_Christ_Soapstar_Superstar_Strictly_on_Ice)*, in which he played R Wayne, a role that involved singing and dancing. In 2012, Pickering played Montparnasse in [Tom Hooper](/source/Tom_Hooper)'s [2012 reimagining](/source/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables_(2012_film)) of the celebrated musical *[Les Misérables](/source/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables_(musical))*. In 2014, he portrayed [Enoch "Nucky" Thompson](/source/Nucky_Thompson) in his younger years, in the fifth and final season of the [HBO](/source/HBO) television series *[Boardwalk Empire](/source/Boardwalk_Empire)*.[3] From December 2015 to January 2016, Pickering played Abanazar in *Aladdin* at the [Milton Keynes Theatre](/source/Milton_Keynes_Theatre). In April and May 2016, he was in the European debut of the rock musical *The Toxic Avenger* at the [Southwark Playhouse](/source/Southwark_Playhouse), London. He also had a part as a pizza delivery man in an episode of the third series of the BBC comedy *Josh* which aired on 6 November 2017.
