# Marc Batta

**Marc Batta** (born 1 November 1953) is a French former [football](/source/Association_football) [referee](/source/Referee_(association_football)).

## Football career

Born in [Marseille](/source/Marseille), Batta reached [FIFA](/source/FIFA) international status in 1990.[1] He was namely in charge of the [1993–94 Coupe de France](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_Coupe_de_France) [final](/source/1994_Coupe_de_France_Final), also directing the first leg of the [1996–97 UEFA Cup](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_UEFA_Cup) [decisive match](/source/1997_UEFA_Cup_Final) between [FC Schalke 04](/source/FC_Schalke_04) and [Inter Milan](/source/Inter_Milan).[2]

In national team competitions, Batta was present at the [UEFA Euro 1996](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996)[3] and the [1998 FIFA World Cup](/source/1998_FIFA_World_Cup) tournaments, refereeing two games in the latter.[4] During the qualification group match between Germany and Portugal (1-1 draw), with Portugal leading after 71 minutes, Batta controversially sent off Rui Costa while he was being subbed off.[5]

In July 2004 Batta succeeded [Michel Vautrot](/source/Michel_Vautrot) as head of referees in the [French Football Federation](/source/French_Football_Federation), remaining in the position for four years.[6][7] On 1 August 2012, he took up the equivalent post with the [Romanian Football Federation](/source/Romanian_Football_Federation).[8]
