For most of its length from the north, this street marks the boundary between the [City of London](/source/City_of_London) and the [London Borough of Tower Hamlets](/source/London_Borough_of_Tower_Hamlets). However, the southernmost part is entirely in Tower Hamlets.

Mansell Street was named after a relative of [William Leman](/source/Sir_William_Leman%2C_2nd_Baronet), whose great-uncle, [John Leman](/source/John_Leman) had bought [Goodman's Fields](/source/Goodman's_Fields) earlier in the seventeenth century.<ref name="rcpath">{{cite web|title=Alie Street Blog Post – July 2015|url=https://www.rcpath.org/discover-pathology/news/alie-street-blog-post-july-2015.html|website=www.rcpath.org|publisher=Royal College of Pathologists|accessdate=19 March 2017}}</ref> Alie Street ran along the western side, with [Leman Street](/source/Leman_Street) to the east, [Prescot Street](/source/Prescot_Street) to the south, and [Alie Street](/source/Alie_Street) to the North.
