**Mannara Chopra** (born **Barbie Handa**) is an [Indian](/source/India) actress and model who primarily works in [Telugu](/source/Telugu_language) and [Hindi](/source/Hindi_language) films and television.[2] Chopra made her film debut with the romance *Prema Geema Jantha Nai* and [Hindi](/source/Bollywood) debut with the thriller *[Zid](/source/Zid_(2014_film))*, both in 2014. She later appeared in films such as *[Thikka](/source/Thikka)* (2016), *[Rogue](/source/Rogue_(2017_film))* (2017) and *[Sita](/source/Sita_(2019_film))* (2019). In 2023, Chopra participated in the reality show *[Bigg Boss 17](/source/Bigg_Boss_(Hindi_TV_series)_season_17)*, where she emerged as the 2nd runner-up.[3]

## Early life and family

Mannara Chopra was born as Barbie Handa on 29 March 1991, in [Ambala Cantonment](/source/Ambala_Cantonment), [Haryana](/source/Haryana). She later changed her name to Mannara Chopra, on her cousin Priyanka's advice.[2][4]

Her mother, Kamini Chopra Handa is a jewellery designer and her father Raman Rai Handa, was an advocate at [Delhi High Court](/source/Delhi_High_Court). She has a younger sister, Mitali Handa, who has studied commerce and is a fashion stylist.[4][5]

Chopra completed her schooling at Summer Fields School, [New Delhi](/source/New_Delhi), and later pursued a [BBA](/source/Bachelor_of_Business_Administration) degree. Actresses [Priyanka Chopra](/source/Priyanka_Chopra), [Parineeti Chopra](/source/Parineeti_Chopra) and [Meera Chopra](/source/Meera_Chopra) are her maternal cousins.[1][6][7]

## Career

### Early work and debut (2012-2015)

After completing her education in Delhi, Chopra moved to [Mumbai](/source/Mumbai), where she started her career in modelling and moved into advertising.[8] She acted in 40 commercials, [Suzuki](/source/Maruti_Suzuki) with [Salman Khan](/source/Salman_Khan), [Dulux](/source/Dulux) paints with [Farhan Akhtar](/source/Farhan_Akhtar), Parle Marie with [Imtiaz Ali](/source/Imtiaz_Ali_(director)), [Myntra](/source/Myntra), three of them alongside her cousin Priyanka Chopra,[9] including one for [Dabur Amla](/source/Dabur), which she said won her "instant recognition" and landed her an offer in Telugu films.[10] Chopra is the original face of [Ganna](/source/Gaana_(music_streaming_service)) commercial, and appeared in [Amit Trivedi](/source/Amit_Trivedi)'s song '"Bas Bajna Chahiye", the theme song for Gaana.[11] Before making her film debut, she also worked as a fashion designer and as an assistant choreographer, being trained in dance forms like hip hop and belly dancing.[12]

By 2014, Mannara ventured into acting, signing up for films in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. Chopra made her acting debut with the [Telugu](/source/Telugu_language) film *Prema Geema Jantha Nai* (2014), then credited under her birth name, which featured her as a "very talkative college going girl" opposite [Sreerama Chandra](/source/Sreerama_Chandra).[10] The same year, Chopra made her [Hindi](/source/Bollywood) debut with [Anubhav Sinha](/source/Anubhav_Sinha)'s *Zid*, co-starring [Karanvir Sharma](/source/Karanvir_Sharma). Her portrayal of an obsessive lover was met with mixed reviews.[14] Mohar Basu of *Koimoi* called her "radiant" though noted that, she needed "a good deal more of experience".[15] The film was a commercially profitable venture.[16]

In 2015, Chopra had special appearance in a song in two [Tamil](/source/Tamil_language) films: *[Sandamarutham](/source/Sandamarutham)* and *[Kaaval](/source/Kaaval_(2015_film))*.[17][18]

### Career fluctuations (2016-2022)

Chopra made her comeback to Telugu films and had two releases in 2016. She first appeared opposite [Sunil](/source/Sunil_(actor)) in *[Jakkanna](/source/Jakkanna)*, which was a hit at the box office. She also played the lead opposite [Sai Dharam Tej](/source/Sai_Dharam_Tej) in *[Thikka](/source/Thikka)*.[19] The film was a commercial failure but won her the Special Jury Award at the [15th Santosham Film Awards](/source/15th_Santosham_Film_Awards).[20]

Chopra made her [Kannada](/source/Kannada) film debut in 2017, with the bilingual *[Rogue](/source/Rogue_(2017_film))*, opposite Ishaan.[21][22] She received another Special Jury Award at [16th Santosham Film Awards](/source/16th_Santosham_Film_Awards) for the film. Chopra played Anjali, a woman threatened by a goon. Mukta Badipatla of *[Times of India](/source/Times_of_India)* stated that she "fits in her role perfectly".[23] After a year-long hiatus, Chopra played Rupa, a personal assistant in *[Sita](/source/Sita_(2019_film))* in 2019.[24][25] Hemanth Kumar of *[Firstpost](/source/Firstpost)* said that Chopra had a "poorly written" part.[26]

In 2021, Chopra played Niharika, a singer in the Hindi short film *Haale Dil on Broken Notes*, opposite [Gautam Vig](/source/Gautam_Vig). In 2022, she played Gayi, one of the five friends in *Hi Five - Fun and Gun*. A reviewer of *[Times of India](/source/Times_of_India)* found her to be "fantastic" in the film.[27]

### *Bigg Boss 17* and beyond (2023-present)

From 2023 to 2024, Chopra appeared on the reality show *[Bigg Boss 17](/source/Bigg_Boss_(Hindi_season_17))*, marking her Hindi television debut.[28][29] She became one of the highest-paid contestant of the season.[30][31] Chopra emerged as the 2nd runner-up.[32]

In 2023, Chopra also made her web debut with [ALT Balaji](/source/ALT_Balaji)'s *Bhootmate*, in which she played a ghost Pari.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Chopra will next appear in the Telugu film *Thiragabadara Saami*, opposite [Raj Tarun](/source/Raj_Tarun) and in the Punjabi film *Ohi Chann Ohi Raatan*.[33]

In addition to her acting career, Chopra has appeared in various music videos such as *Na Hona Tumse Door* with [Gajendra Verma](/source/Gajendra_Verma), *Ham Reh Gaye Akele* with Pranav Vatsa and *Sukoon* with [Ashmit Patel](/source/Ashmit_Patel). Chopra also appeared as a showstopper for Ashima S at the 2017 [India Runway Week](/source/India_Runway_Week).[35] In 2023, Chopra made her singing debut with *Zara Zara Behekta Hai*.[36] In 2024, Chopra appeared in the music video *Saanware* opposite Abhishek Kumar, her first project post *Bigg Boss*.[37]
