**Manfred Frank** (born March 22, 1945) is a German [philosopher](/source/Philosopher) who is emeritus professor of philosophy at the [University of Tübingen](/source/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen).[2]

## Life and work

Frank was born in [Elberfeld](/source/Elberfeld), Germany, and studied philosophy at the [University of Heidelberg](/source/University_of_Heidelberg) under teachers such as [Hans-Georg Gadamer](/source/Hans-Georg_Gadamer), [Karl Löwith](/source/Karl_L%C3%B6with), [Ernst Tugendhat](/source/Ernst_Tugendhat), and [Dieter Henrich](/source/Dieter_Henrich).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] After teaching at the [University of Düsseldorf](/source/University_of_D%C3%BCsseldorf) from 1971 to 1982, and at the [University of Geneva](/source/University_of_Geneva) from 1982 to 1987, Frank accepted a position at Tübingen in 1987. He is a specialist in the [philosophy of literature](/source/Philosophy_of_literature).[3]

Frank's work focuses on [German idealism](/source/German_idealism), [romanticism](/source/Romanticism), and the concepts of [subjectivity](/source/Subjectivity) and [self-consciousness](/source/Self-awareness). His 950-page study of German romanticism, *Unendliche Annäherung*, has been described as "the most comprehensive and thoroughgoing study of early German romanticism" and "surely one of the most important books from the post-War period on the history of German philosophy."[4] He has also written at length on [analytic philosophy](/source/Analytic_philosophy) and recent French philosophy.
