Traditionally, mambuha is taken directly from the ''[yardna](/source/yardna)'' (river, i.e. the [Euphrates](/source/Euphrates), [Tigris](/source/Tigris), or [Karun](/source/Karun) rivers), but the Mandaean diaspora often uses treated tap water.
